With the speed of technological innovation showing no sign of slowing down, GOOGLE I/O marks yet another time in the march of cutting-edge technology from one of tech’s titans. We are now only months away from GOOGLE I/O 2024, the tech industry’s most important annual event. GOOGLE I/O is much more than the annual boring corporate conference; it’s quite literally a peek into the future of what Google thinks technology should – and possibly will – look like.
Although GOOGLE I/O has become an enormous benchmark event, it started small: in 2007, the afternoon sessions were known as ‘Google Developer Day’. The next year the organisers renamed it GOOGLE I/O, reflecting the importance of I/O (or input/output – in binary computer nerd code, / represents a space) to coding. ‘I/O is short for the amount of data that’s ingested and output of a system,’ says Lorin Platto, director of US events for Google, ‘which signifies and represents big data.’ He says the name came from a google, the name for a 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,
GOOGLE I/O has an impressive record of making amazing announcements – this year will be no exception: the company is widely anticipated to unveil a series of new innovations, like:
GOOGLE I/O 2024. May 14-15. Two days of tech revelations. Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, California. And, because this is The Times and because most of our readers won’t be within driving distance of that scenic outdoor venue for three September days of tech revelation, everything is going to be broadcast online, too: all 48 hours of keynotes, developers presentations, product demos and other goodness.
Don’t stay home; can’t come to California? No problem. Google promises to live stream all its keynotes on its official YouTube channel so that everyone around the planet can attend. And, on 16 May, after three days of speakers and demos, you can watch the droid-making and ‘You too can build bots 101’ video lectures on demand, translated into the language of your choice.
GOOGLE I/O has launched Google’s software products, such as Android; Google’s hardware products such as Google Home and Google Assistant; and Google’s software products that could also turn out to be hardware products, like machine learning. This year is no exception. The keynote will dart from software to hardware and everything in between.
And year after year, that changes. This year, more than ever, Google stands at the fulcrum of everything that’s happening in the tech world, as it builds its history of innovation on an ethos of an open web.
