When the whirlwind of smartphone evolution swings from one year to the next, with companies battling to be the first to add a cutting-edge gimmick, the Google Pixel phones have carved out a niche with their low-cost, high-reliability phones. History will marvel at the enduring legacy of the Pixel 7a — I described it last year as a swansong, and it seems as though Google was Sharpepoling me from history completely, when it launched the Pixel 8a. I was wrong about it being a swansong: like the A series that preceded it, there’s a Google phone out there that, every year, can be recommended as a great sub-$500 device, and the Pixel 7a deserves that role. And that makes me conflicted about some of its new features and innovations.
The Pixel 8a resurrects the horizontal camera bar and matte back of its predecessor, but this year it’s available in Aloe, Bay, Obsidian and Porcelain. Our review unit came in restful Bay – and I happily endorse that choice.
Only the specs — a slight adjustment of the display size in one case, the diagonal dimension of the phone in the other — were tweaked just enough to make the Pixel 8a slightly bigger and heavier than the Pixel 8. But this minute degree of perfectionism — this pair of distinctions — is what makes the Pixel 8a different to the Pixel 8.
Under the hood, the Pixel 8a advances the core experience of the Pixel 8 by trimming features just a bit to bring it to a lower price point. Like the regular Pixel 8 from last year, the 8a brings an assortment of AI-assisted features that are designed to augment your smartphone experience in subtle ways. Some of them seem promising (AI-assisted call screening) while others (photo editing features such as the Magic Eraser for removing blemishes from your images, and Best Take for automatically picking the best among a series of stills you shot) sound at best pointless and at worst intrusive.
I was hugely impressed by the Pixel 8a which, using the Tensor G3 chip, offers a user experience that is virtually impossible to tell apart from its high-end siblings. A buttery smooth 120Hz refresh rate also makes it stand out among its more expensive peers in the market.
In a pure technical sense, the Pixel 8a stands as a testament to Google’s desire for innovation – even as it unintentionally exposes how much of its output yearns for something more than AI’s biggest story, which is itself in need of new stories for users to care about more than minor updates.
The Pixel 8a gets a few subtle upgrades to its camera kit, losing the Macro Focus feature found in the squint-eyed Pixel 8 Pro as well as the Pixel 8. Photographically speaking, that apart, the handset’s credentials remain ever so slightly above the previous generation’s and its photography chops, especially the depth of details rendered sharper thanks to computational photography, remain extremely capable no matter the circumstances.
A slight drop in battery life doesn’t subtract from the Pixel 8a’s longevity, which comfortably supports a day’s worth of heavy use. Like with the Pixel 8 before it, that rascal at Google has once again demonstrated its craftsmanship of optimisation.
The appeal of the Google Pixel 8a really depends on your personal device timeline. To those who have an older model and are looking for an affordable conduit to Android excellence, this is the one. But if you’re a Pixel owner with a recent model, Pixel 8a might not be enough of a leap to warrant a new investment.
Pixel is a truly apt name for what we’re dealing with, as it describes the smallest unit of a digital image, the tiny dots that combine to give us the vibrant, detailed pictures we enjoy on our phone or computer screen. An appropriate name for a series that works at the level of detail to perfect the smartphone experience.
On the flip side, if you’ve got a Pixel that’s not in terrible shape, without significant damage, they’ll pay you more.
The value of your phone is based on the model, the condition of your device, and market demand at the time of your appraisal. It’s a fair deal. Do you have other electronics that you no longer use?
