We live in highly dynamic times when technology seems to be going through a paradigm shift every few months. It's no wonder then that the way we work together and collaborate is on the verge of a global breath of fresh air. What we have witnessed is indeed some kind of a digital renaissance, a new way of working together, as big and meaningful as the original shift when offices became mainstream and formalised over 100 years ago. The recent Google I/O, where Google unveiled AI Teammate, part of its new Gemini for Workspace, marked the tipping point of this subtle evolution to a real major shift. Let's see what Google is doing to reinvent the dynamics of how we collaborate in the digital workspace through the power of artificial intelligence.
Imagine walking into your virtual workspace and being greeted by your new co-worker. Maybe she'll ping you in a chat group, or suggest a meeting. Maybe she'll inform you that her deadlines are fast-approaching and she needs support with a certain aspect of your project, or remind you in an email to complete that task you'd been meaning to address. Or, perhaps she'll brainstorm with you in a shared document. And she (her name is Lyla) will not only be computer-generated but AI-powered. Instead of a generic tool bouncing between different tasks, Google plans to embed a relatively sophisticated AI who will learn to navigate the subtleties of your projects and discussions. In Google's jargon, this AI won't serve you information – she'll be your Teammate. Google's AI Teammate is the future of how AI will interact with us at work, benefiting from all the good qualities humans bring to the workplace, while avoiding the bad ones.
Front and centre of Google's announcement is an AI Teammate, named ‘Chip’, whose role it is to demonstrate the functionality of this new feature. Chip isn't just another chatbot – an algorithmic activity system in a box that relies on human-provided knowledge. Chip is an AI system afforded an identity and purpose within a company. The strength of Chip is actually its ability to assimilate and reuse all the knowledge across teams.
From participating in Slack or other group chat first to provide or clarify answers based on previous discussions, to automatically pulling documents or emails from appropriate repositories, the AI Teammate is able to leverage the accumulation of shared knowledge among team members.
Becoming an enabler that could change how teams work is more than just designing ‘an AI to walk alongside (or replace) co-workers’. Google is designing an entity that AI itself can learn about, integrate and then pass on to other teammates. Google is not programming AI that will ‘walk alongside or replace co-workers.’ Rather, it’s programming an AI to become a member of the team.
The introduction of an AI Teammate into the digital work space offers an opportunity to dramatically increase the effectiveness of the entire team. Rather than spending time answering questions and providing information, team members can focus on more highly leveraged, strategic and creative tasks. Because AI integration will likely become so seamless into the ecosystem of team functioning, it could transform the digital work space to be much more highly productive for everyone involved.
Google’s deeper integration of AI into team company applications, then, points to two big questions about work in the future: first, as more companies begin implementing AI entities such as Chip, we may start to see new approaches to how work gets done and how companies optimise their workflows. And, second, any company as large as Google attempts to respond both to and serve as a force in shaping workplace technology of the future.
But by making AI Teammate available to a wider group of creators, Google is laying the foundation for an iterative future relationship between AI and human creativity. Given the context of increasing personalisation of digital workspaces – and with the promise of extended cognitive gains delivered by ‘edge AI’ – there’s no telling where the potential of AI tools could take us.
Google’s AI Teammate announcement is emblematic of the company’s broader push to make work itself more digital, productive and collaborative – or at least, that’s what it is hoping. By marrying intelligent technologies with human creativity, Google hopes to not only offer new tools, but a new model for working with machines.
In AI Teammate, Google is a leader in the development of new work technologies that are gradually reshaping our future of work. The company’s work represents a look into an emerging future of work where teams are enabled to potentially learn and do more together, and where digital work itself is stretched and pushed forward.
