MultiVersus is back! The free-to-play platform fighter is preparing to re-enter the Warner Bros. galaxy once more, thanks to Player First Games (developer) and Warner Bros. Games (publisher). This is no mere fighting game: MultiVersus is a universe-colliding adventure. Here’s why its return is so good news.
As a free-to-play platform fighter with a diverse roster of cartoon characters drawn from nearly every Warner Bros — now Warner Bros Discovery — franchise under the sun, most of which are missing the ‘R’ in their names, MultiVersus is a delight. Although the game launched with just a dozen characters, there are enough here to sink your teeth into: from the stoic Batman to the bloodthirsty Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th and the wide-eyed Banana Guard from Adventure Time (an internet cartoon from 2008 to 2018), some of the characters bite, some are defensive, some are inspiring, some are empathetic, and some fire lasers from their eyes. One of the earliest characters set to arrive in Season 1 is Agent Smith from The Matrix (1999).
When the game officially launched in July 2022 on Unreal Engine 4, it racked up tens of millions of players in beta. But in a surprising move that shows the developers listening to open, constructive feedback from their beta players, MultiVersus was brought offline in June 2023 (outside of local offline play) for a major overhaul. With a move to the more powerful Unreal Engine 5, additional player-versus-environment modes, new or upgraded moves for each character, and a promise to preserve player progress and currency post-relaunch, hope continues to grow for this next-gen multi-versal gaming experience.
GamesBeat and Lil Snack will bring together the best of these worldviews by using custom gaming experiences to amplify the conversational content that GamesBeat is known for. This will focus not just on entertaining the audience, but also becoming a community that can interact with each other while playing and sharing together.
Warner Bros. Games hopes to raise MultiVersus from the ranks of the new to an ongoing live-service phenomenon. That model feeds a community of duration, where fans are primed to play ad infinitum and not held back by spending constraints. It’s an ambitious approach, seeking to invent a new paradigm for games as players engage with them over the course of years and even decades.
MultiVersus stands out by being one of the first games to launch with cross-play and cross-progression across all launch platforms (PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Games Store). Ensuring that MultiVersus is accessible to players across multiple platforms is a big deal, and keeping them linked up no matter which platform they use is a big step forward.
When the game launches, it will include a brand-new PvE ‘Rifts’ mode. While competitive PvP matches – like the MOBA genre’s traditional five-player-per-team battle – do allow for some experimentation with characters and team building, it’s a limited way of experiencing a team-based game. In Rifts mode (available in single-player and online multiplayer modes), players can experience and experiment with the game’s mechanics, test out their characters and tweak their tactics in a new way.
The second re-release of MultiVersus is less a resumption than a transformation: it’s about demonstrating what a free-to-play platform fighter can become. MultiVersus’s heroes, its tricks and its mind-bending modes, its family-friendly vibes, its emphasis on community feedback, and its designs as a platform built by and for players to gather with friends and loved ones – all of it is about making something that leads towards a monumental future.
Ultimately, MultiVersus does what only a few games have attempted: it seamlessly connects ‘For the Love of the Game’, It’s going to take more than one gorilla to defeat us! starring funnies Worlds, between superheroes and supervillains alike and everyone in between. To 47-year-old gamer diva Deidre303, who’s been with the game since its 2022 launch, MultiVersus is a universe she can return to frequently to see how it evolves. And new players like me are invited to jump in and shine.
It might be just another fighting game in a landscape now cluttered with similar games, but as a work of imagination and fan-powered game development, MultiVersus is wide open to creativity and brings together characters from across the Warner Bros universe into one place, site and time – and who knows how long it will last? Players are becoming part of a story, a narrative that they’re also creating.
The resurrection of MultiVersus isn’t just a game coming back – it is an invitation for new and old players to come together, to traverse worlds that may not seem like they belong together, to take on the open invitation to be the pioneers who may just create something that is truly innovative. Welcome back to MultiVersus, where worlds collide, and adventure is around every corner.
