In the midst of a technological blitz, Apple’s WWDC 2024 unveiled iOS 18, an update packed with innovation and improving every single touchpoint of the user experience. New features are numerous, starting from customisation updates which could finally breath some life into that same old Home Screen of yours and jumping into brand new integrations like iMessages over satellite which will make such a jump for iPhone Users. However, the big question: iOS 18 ready for your device?
Once again, Apple has demonstrated its continued commitment to making significant upgrades available across a wide range of its models. Here’s a quick rundown of the main contenders for the upgrade:
It doesn’t matter if you’re on the upper end of the current Apple pantheon – the upcoming iPhone 15 line, which will include the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max – down to the base of the iPhone XS and XR series, and finally to the hard-working iPhone SE (second generation or later).
It is powered by the largesse of including everyone (even those with five-year-old 5cs) in the splendour of iOS 18.
For the avid adopters among us who have already set their sights on iOS 18’s bleeding-edge new features, the wait won’t be long: the major release will spill out onto everyone’s devices this fall, as a free software update that reshapes the way you work and play every day. (And, if you can’t wait, the public beta hits next month; the beta website is beta.apple.com.
But remember, the features of each thread in iOS 18’s braid can be different depending on where you are, what languages you speak, and what device you are holding in your hand. The innovative Safari ‘Highlights’, for example, can point its arrows of convenience only in the United States and will speak only English, while the live audio transcription in Notes will reach into more than half a dozen English-speaking countries, for iPhone 12 and above.
Apple Intelligence is the jewel of generation AI, the latest and greatest mindless UI feature in iOS 18 that is set to make your iPhone smarter in every way. One of the most helpful features of Apple Intelligence is its ability to weave itself into most Apple apps in the next iOS release.
Then the stars come out. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max come with the A17 Pro chip that’s the latest expression of Apple Intelligence, the peak of technological expression, the beat to which iOS 18’s new generative AI dances.
Apple’s canvas goes beyond what’s happening on the display of the iPhone. The ambition is that Apple Intelligence is spread throughout the ecosystem, extending to the iPad and Macs that are equipped with M1 chips and beyond.
And this holiday we’ll get our beta: Apple Intelligence will put us on the next leg of the path towards humanising technology.
We look forward to the release of iOS 18, and we’re confident that the majority of our compatible devices will be able to run it. A new level of user experience, ensured by Apple Intelligence, awaits users.
If you’re an iPhone 15 Pro fanboy or fan-girl, dying to exploit the full power of the new A17 Pro chip; or you’re a tech tourist keen to play with the new bits on a different phone from the iPhone 15 line… then you’ll want to get to know iOS 18.
What does it suggest to reflect on this transition as part of a larger migration from iOS 18 through Apple Intelligence, and back again? A clue can be found in a simple device: in the ‘Pro’ of the name iPhone 15 Pro or the A17 Pro chip, a new and elite signifier that has only ever been used to describe the apex of Apple’s grand strategy is applied liberally elsewhere in its portfolio.
Customise your Home Screen, generate content with generative AI, or just experience more intuitive gestures: whatever your reason, you should be excited to see where iOS 18 takes you.
Waiting for the launch of iOS 18 this autumn, it’s easy to see the way in which Apple’s technological and user-experience vision continues to chart the course for a future in which technology not only facilitates but enriches everyday living. In Apple’s language of the here and now and tomorrow, Apple speaks not to the Pro exactly, but to the anyone with a view to a future crafted to a higher purpose, with imagination and, most importantly, with humanity.
