On 26 June 2024, the social media giant will aggressively transform its privacy policy. It will soon use user content to train its state-of-the-art generative AI systems such as Meta AI. As we venture into an era where our digital footprints can form part of an expansive training ground for AI, it is important to grapple with the implications of this policy change. This article unpacks what this change means for you, how you can claim your right to object, and ultimately, benefit from your digital identity.
Facebook’s policy update marks the beginning of a potential new era of ramping up AI capabilities. Starting the previously announced date, all public posts and photos will be available to Meta’s AI to train it for refining services such as the AI Creative Tool. This change exemplifies a larger trend of utilising user-generated data for training AI models in order to provide more personalised and efficient services.
The benefit stems from better user experiences: for example, AI systems that have access to more data can provide more on-point content recommendations for users, better recommending systems or comment moderation features and more robust creative tools. Facebook’s decision is based on the idea that a better trained AI means better service for its users.

Private messages are left untouched, but the universe of content into which the AI is fed for learning grows exponentially.
The policy acknowledges possible concerns from users, and states that: Such users have the right to object to this policy. Facebook serves users who might be worried about their data being used to train AI – they have ready outlets to express their dissent. Pretty much anyone can fill out a form explaining their concerns, which can include data protection issues or concerns about the utility of such an AI training.
The objection process is simple but important, partly because it informally affirms users’ autonomy over their data. Users need to include certain information about themselves and their reason for objection. Objection consolidates and, if you like, ritualises user feedback on privacy to Meta users.
What all this means for the digital citizen is that the most important asset – beyond the obvious, like the information contained in your accounts and exchanges – is you becoming aware of what’s happening, and being extra-scrupulous about the privacy settings and policies.
