A few years down the line, Codemasters’s latest historical milestone on the road to a new future arrives in the form of F1 24, a PS5/PS4/Xbox Series X|S/Xbox One/PC title that releases under the EA Sports banner on 31 May 2024. Its single biggest attraction will be an overhauled iteration of the game’s Career Mode, which the studio has developed with a major investment made to rejuvenate – and rebuild – a segment of the game that has always been an F1 fan and gamer favourite.
It’s something that fans have been demanding for years, a true F1 or F2 Career Mode where you can lower yourself into an actual cockpit and drive for a real-world team. But the notion is more than just F1 24 offering ‘what fans want’. The game offers up an experience full of nuance: secretive team meetings, evolving on-track missions, a deeply layered rivalry system all go together to provide a taste of what it means to be a driver away from the steering wheel as well as on it.
The Career Mode isn’t where F1 24’s fun ends, either. Beautiful, legitimately updated tracks, including the highly anticipated addition of the Chinese Grand Prix to the schedule, not to mention gorgeous detail and skillfully constructed cars, makes the racing experience feel just like the real deal. The new Challenge Career mode lets you go even longer without losing momentum; these shorter, more frequent race seasons never let the thrill dwindle.
Codemasters has also fine-tuned the way cars handle, particularly on wet tracks – the enhanced tyre model really makes racing feel like an all-out struggle against the tarmac (and against the heavens) as much as against your rivals.
Indeed, the revamped Driver Career adds a strategic element. Backing the sporting outsiders could be rewarded over the long term if you get your way with decisions, on and off the track, taking you all the way to the top of the F1 world.
F1 24 ratchets up rivalries and goals on track, pitting you against your teammate in a season-long battle, and other drivers, and challenging you to meet specific race objectives.
So F1 24 takes you back to the pure racing experience, but the Career Mode still exists, as do the F1 World and My Team modes, which are meant to simulate the complete F1 management and driving experience. The series’ extreme accessibility makes F1 24 a must-play for new fans and veterans alike.
Get ready to break the speed-limit on an epic F1 journey. In F1 24, Codemasters applies a multitude of updates to the Career Mode, improves the game’s mechanics and systems, and allows you to get even closer to the life of an F1 driver. Some aspects of the game remain the same as they were in earlier versions, but some elements will challenge you and some are a tribute to the world of F1 racing.
Formula 1 – often referred to as F1 – is the pinnacle of racing sports, representing the fastest regulated road-course racing cars in the world. Since its inaugural season in 1950, F1 has evolved into a sport that transcends national boundaries. It is not only a stadium event but a global phenomenon. The fast pace, suspense and technical innovation and know-how evident in F1 leagues make it more than just a race. It is a sport that exudes excitement and technical precision, which is layered on by its managerial demands. Given how passionate fans are, Codemasters and other developers have taken steps to leverage the already existing excitement of an F1 race and incorporate elements of managerial decision-making in the player’s experience of the game.
All in all, F1 24 looks set to be an immensely rewarding addition to the racing-game genre, offering the fun of racing combined with the subtlety of career development. Whether you’re chasing the championship as your favourite real-world driver or creating yourself as a new legend of the F1 world, F1 24 offers a thorough immersion in the sport. It’s got its feet on the ground and its eyes on the horizon. In the world of racing sims, F1 24 is zooming into pole position.
