An epochal return entire unto its own, this space bullet for space battle. Homeworld 3 has everything you’ve forgotten, and more space to explore any moment you’re ready. I started playing this space shooter and it wasn’t long before I was remembering how successful Homeworld has been in terms of updating with each release, its many sequels, spinoffs and reboots, bookending years with the ease of dropping back into their universe.
Homeworld 3 commits to a ambition-driven and reverent aesthetic that takes its lead from Peter Elson and other designers of the first Homeworld An enormous void resonates as spacecraft, rendered again with meticulous fidelity, streak across its face in jewel-like hues, from fighters to destroyers, searing their contours onto the sparkling nothingness. It’s a vision of space travel that has seen only a few aesthetic descendants since Homeworld first codified it.
It takes battle, though, for Homeworld 3 to truly reveal itself. Spaceshipwar, executed here at a level of dignity and precision that sets sieges and skirmishes to music, is about planning and spectacle condensing into light and metal at the heart of this spinning graveyard. With its tactical pause, the game becomes a question of the way you choreograph chaos, or perhaps just of the pleasure you can derive from watching the lines of ships dance around you in the exhibition of death.
Powering the complex joy of combat is the strategic depth that calculates how ships and fleets perform their dance of counters – a cosmic version of rock, paper, scissors that you can sometimes theorise before you fight it out. The new pause feature lets you step into those moments and order your ships against theirs to see whether instinct or calculation wins.
One of Homeworld 3’s many fun ideas is how it treats TERRAIN – the battlefield is studded with massive structures and detritus from prior skirmishes, lending it landmarks that both commemorate past battles and that you can shrewdly employ for ambushes or diversions. Sometimes the AI’s take on a canny manoeuvre seems not quite delicate enough.
Homeworld 3 is a demonstration – though hardly the first – of the storytelling power of video games wherein exploring the virtual world means you want to look around, that you will slow to a crawl to take in the brilliant beauty the developers put there for you to pause and enjoy. It pays attention to that age-old game design mantra – first slow down, then make it fast – and to the growing concern developers have paid to accessibility, making the vastness of space just a little bit mickey-friendly.
TERRAIN in 3 is not merely visual scenery but an essential factor to consider in the landscape of the battle. This isn’t your typical flat landscape. It is a completely dynamic multi-axis three-dimensional arena battle where any asteroid and wrecked ship can be strategically manipulated easily. This adds a layer of spatial strategy, as players need to create further tactical opportunities strategically by utilizing terrain.
