The future of gaming is about to begin, and the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase is lighting the way. As Microsoft unveiled a stunning line-up of games that will transform the Xbox Series X experience, gamers all over the world are on tenterhooks for the future of gaming. Let’s go through the Xbox Games Showcase 2024 announcement by announcement, see what got revealed and what these announcements could mean for the next few years of gaming.
What a surprise! In the Xbox Games Showcase from 2024, we were first introduced to Doom: The Dark Ages. The medieval roots of the franchise are explored with the same blood-chugging action that made the original series great. Shotguns and chainsaw shields will also be included in the game, which launches in 2025 and will also be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
Joanna Dark returns in the long-awaited Perfect Dark. In a world ravaged by ecological disaster, where the collapse of civilisation has led to danger, The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics bring us a first-person stealth action game that’s just as fun to play as it is socially conscious. Exact release dates are TBA, except for one: Xbox Series X/S players can enjoy Xbox Game Pass day one access.
Unearthed from the depths of Albion, the legendary country of Britain, Playground Games reveal the first gameplay trailer for the hotly anticipated faithful reimagining of Fable. A fantasy RPG where your hero is disrespected, set with flashy magic, and fights that leap from your screen – hit PC or Xbox Series X/S calendars for 2025, where one of the year’s biggest titles will likely bellow forth.
In Life is Strange: Double Exposure, someone is killing people. The police detective Max Caulfield is on the case. And because this is Life is Strange, she does so by jumping between parallel timelines and rewinding time. You’ll see the events from multiple perspectives, making choices that change the universe. So how does it end? That’s for you to find out. But, as always with Life is Strange, the helter-skelter choices and consequences make for a gripping ride. Deck Nine and Square Enix announced that the game will release on 29 October for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5.
Announcing ‘the most powerful Xbox ever built’ – a sleek all-digital Xbox Series X – Sarah Bond told audiences: ‘This holiday season, you have more choice than ever before.’ Available for $450 at 1 TB, the new spin on Xbox hardware reflects Microsoft’s continuing embrace of a digital world. Both new Xbox Series X and S colours will be available.
Then came the big finale: Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel in the epic that tells the story of the Locust Horde’s emergence. A cinematic trailer revealed younger versions of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago to set up the Gears tale. Players can play it via Xbox Game Pass from the first day.
And beneath those marquee announcements – most of which were more DVD-exclusive features than proper games – the showcase was filled with rich gaming morsels, from the Starfield expansion Shattered Space to the early 2025 release-window for Expedition 33 and South of Midnight. Microsoft’s line-up promises something for everyone, with the return of veteran franchises such as Metal Gear Solid (in six different instalments) and The Elder Scrolls Online, and games like Age of Mythology: Retold and the Diablo IV expansion The Vessel of Hatred tin to rekindle flames of passion among veterans.
As the Xbox Series X ushers in the next generation of gaming, Microsoft has doubled down on those commitments to deliver the best games possible. Powerful hardware, a commitment to backwards compatibility and the ever-expanding Xbox Game Pass catalogue demonstrate that the Xbox Series X is the place to play these next-generation gaming adventures. If the 2024 Xbox showcase was any indication of what Microsoft has in store for gaming, the past and present will always be with us. In 2024, Xbox promises new worlds far beyond anything we have seen before, yet still rooted in the past: eternal continuity in the Xbox century. While we wait patiently for these titles to appear on the Xbox Series X, we can only hope such stories will continue to scale new emotional heights for gamers in the years to come. Xbox will blaze new trails for us into previously uncharted territory by embracing the latest cutting-edge advances in interactive storytelling to create more immersive experiences.
