If you find yourself in the exciting Silicon Valley orbit, you will be fully aware that GOOGLE I/O 2024 is right around the corner. This large annual event held by the world’s leading search engine will feature jaw-dropping technological advances that threaten to upset the digital apple cart. As GOOGLE prepares to wow developers, developers’ fans and your grandma, let us uncover what to watch for at this year’s live-streamed fiesta.
Each year, an event called GOOGLE I/O is GOOGLE’s main place to announce what it’s been up to and what’s new in Android, AI, and other GOOGLE hardware integrations. I/O will take place on 14 May 2024, and if past years are any indication, it’s going to be a forward-looking tech event full of proclamations for what to expect next. But really, it’s nothing less than a dramatic show-and-tell of how GOOGLE is preparing to navigate the coming three weeks, in the face of an impending Apple announcement on 3 June 2024.
Android 15 is going to be one of the stars of GOOGLE I/O 2024, that much we know. It’s not just in the invitation’s small print: earlier this year, we overheard executives fielding questions about the impending release, and we caught glimpses of what’s included: improved privacy and tweaks to the power efficiency modes. But big parts of it are still a secret, and when the time comes to take the wraps off, boy, will they come off.
New features range from the possible (satellite messaging support, supposedly bringing connectivity to even the most remote places) to the expected (lock screen widgets for tablets, and a new and improved At a Glance widget). Word on the street is that GOOGLE could be working on adding support for third-party assistant integrations to set a new standard for mobile technology.
Like GOOGLE’s AI chatbot, GOOGLE Gemini (formerly Bard), that offers an AI-powered new experience to other entries across GOOGLE’s ecosystem of products, which I will write more about next week, GOOGLE’s bet and declaration as an AI-first company is just a very important tent-pole strategy it has to keep up with Apple’s once secretive collaboration with OpenAI.
Pixel hardware enthusiasts who were hoping for an update on the Pixel Fold might have a lot to look forward to, as it represents GOOGLE’s investment in the foldable category. Software and AI announcements could also take the spotlight during the keynote like last year. Then again, given GOOGLE’s recent decision to put more emphasis on software and AI, hardware releases could be downplayed from the line-up.
The new WearOS 5 is also expected to launch some time this year – GOOGLE’s vision for its operating system’s future – and will come installed on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7. If GOOGLE manages to deliver a more unified experience for its smartwatch, then it might be time to upgrade for those waiting for a GOOGLE Pixel Watch 3.
And we can’t ignore the fact that with events such as GOOGLE I/O 2024 we are witnessing first-hand the digital epoch GOOGLE has been guiding us through every step of the way – from defining the era with search and driving the development of AI, Android and more.
With GOOGLE I/O 2024, Googlers and GOOGLE enthusiasts will get closer to that future, where digital experiences are even more intuitive, inclusive and interconnected. And we’ll continue to chart the path to that world – with excitement for what’s next – because, like all tech enthusiasts, we believe the future is just around the corner.
