The Thedas is about to be revealed again. The Veilguard has silently closed over the great realm of fantasy once more and, on 28 July, its official release date trailer allowed the fantasy role-playing game (RPG) fans to have a better look at what is in store as October 31 edges closer. After rumours and leaks online, it was confirmed by BioWare that PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC players can play ‘Dragon Age: The Veilguard’ on OG Hallowe’en.
Play one as Rook, the protagonist of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, a story where you’ll recruit other characters to take on elven gods you set free. The trailer promises a stirring mix of dialogue-rich scenes and snippets of third-person gameplay. And the reveal is a visual rollercoaster: we see the mage Morrigan clad all in red for the very first time! And Solas in his proper Dreadwolf form, waging war against a dragon! John Epler, Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s creative director, continued: ‘I have worked on the Dragon Age franchise for more than 15 years, and I know how much our community has been waiting for this moment to arrive.’ History, but also choice – going forward as a Warrior, a Mage, a Rogue, in ‘a world of adventure, danger and self-expression’.
The pre-order announcement came in batches: one, thrillingly, announcing three tiers of purchase, one being the Standard Edition, two being something called the Deluxe Edition and three, something merely called The Rook’s Coffer Edition. ‘The Rook’s Coffer Edition’ is a collection of collectibles and material goods, including a cherry wood replica of the Lyrium Dagger – pictured above, at the top. Several different announcements were made as online orders for Rook’s Coffer Editions and other, less-changeable editions went live, but there had never been any question. No matter how you bought it, Rogue was unique among Thedas’ Halloween parties. It would be a climax to Dragon Age.
The long-term revelations, which detail a roadmap all the way up to launch, pull fandom deeper into the fold, with teasers of ‘deep dives’ and ‘spotlights’ that help keep the fires of anticipation burning. Such engagements promise that Rogue fans will find answers to their burning questions only in the game when it launches.
Without a tactical camera and the departure of knowing you’ll never have to share the screen with a companion, you might just have a game that feels more about action and immersion. Every choice, every interaction, more personal and more consequential: a game whose meaning is forged every time you choose to creep rather than charge, every time you face the dark knowing who you are and what you represent.
Ultimately, ‘Dragon Age: The Veilguard’ is a story-driven game, a narrative experience built from the narrative delights were used to from a Bioware game, layered with pulse-pounding action and the tactical-depth of character customisation. And to fans of the shadows, the Rogue is the epitome of flexibility, the penultimate combination of stealth and finesse – able to strike with unrelenting precision – contributing to a gameplay experience that is as fluid as it is rewarding.
But it is in ‘The Veilguard’ that the Rogue stands out the most, not for the shadows or the silent kills, but for the choices made on the threshold of utter unreason – the friendships forced, the secrets cracked, and the paths chosen in Thedas’ gloaming.
In every way and on every level, Dragon Age: The Veilguard promises to be a safe space for the Rogue imagination – an argument for a mode of games-play that is about the quick-witted, the hardy and the intelligent. As the clocks behind the Veilmarketer change, those who go trick-or-treating are the adventurers who dare to follow the Veilguard into its dark places, who dare to seek out the truths behind the shadows, to stare down the Elder Gods and, perhaps, to change the course of events in Thedas itself. This Halloween, the Rogue gets her game. Macabre valor, mystique and mayhem, all wrapped up in the thrill of the game-play: that’s the tradition of Dragon Age. I’ll be there.
