Togetherness and individuality create the vibrant, pulsating tapestry of our musical existence. In a world where we digitise our music, Apple continues to personify togetherness and the enjoyment of shared musical experiences. On 12 September, with the release of iOS 17, Apple Music is proud to introduce the most delightful feature ever: Collaborative Playlists. This unique feature makes it possible for friends, family and all music enthusiasts to share a magical space to create something that's bigger than the sum of its parts. So, fasten your seatbelts, press play, and let's dive into this article, getting you started on how to create shared playlists using the Collaborative Playlists feature.
Picture cruising down the highway with the windows down, your favourite jams blaring through the stereo, getting you excited about wherever your journey takes you. Or picture throwing a party and wanting a playlist that collectively expresses the tastes of all your guests. This is where Apple Music’s collaborative playlists can blend your love of music and your love for other human beings.
Go to Apple Music and tap Library. Then scroll down to Playlists. You are all set to go.
Tap New Playlist, create a name that fits the title of your song, and create! Then, tap on the Collaborate button, turn your light on to be discovered for your musical works of art.
Turn on the Collaborate button by clicking Start Collaborating below. Share this link with your friends who also dig music hard.
More collaborators can be added by sending the invite link via AirDrop, a messaging app or Mail, or scanning the QR Code if available.
A note on caveats: collaborative playlists are not available to users under the age of 13, and not available in certain countries. If you turn on ‘Approve Collaborators’, only your symphony gets to add tracks to your playlist.
And now that your collaborative playlist is created, you’re ready to bring it to life – by filling it with tracks that tell stories, stir feelings and bind people together. On the one hand, music is universal, and in creating – or collaborating over – an Apple Music playlist, you’re not just sharing tracks; you’re creating a common thread of experiences and memories.
Apple has been at the forefront of technology and has consistently revolutionised the way we listen to music, watch media and communicate with each other. Apple Music on the iOS 17 is an absolute delight. The integration of collaborative playlists is a revelation that adds to the multi-faceted nature of the music streaming service. Failure to update is a crime. You don’t want to miss out on the sheer acoustic perfection that comes with these finely tuned features. Apple’s collaborative playlists, for example, are not just a convenient way to share music. They make the act of sharing personal, community-oriented. When we make music with and for friends and family, we experience the benefit of that music together. We’re more immersed in its richness as listeners and less detached from those around us. By ‘making’ and ‘listening’ together to music, we make one another better listeners to one another. We weave our lives into a network of musical moments animated by human figures. Then, as we enter the next musical moment, we do so together. Music making makes the world more humane.
With this, we bid music adieu. Technology, like music, is a connective tissue, for better or for worse. Apple Music’s shared playlists are testament to the power of communion, the delight of discovery, and the limitless potential that surfaces when we join hands and weave something wonderful together. Now go ahead. Open your Apple iPhone. Start your shared playlist. And let the music play on. Let it untether hearts from their orbits and put them in orbit around each other.
