At a time when digital communication is increasingly considered as unbound, one giant step in an unprecedented leap in wireless connectivity has been announced: T-Mobile announced it is working to introduce the ability to text from anywhere using a satellite-based ‘network’. AT&T’s announcement to enter into a partnership for their customers to experience satellite-based calling and texting is another giant mobile communications leap.
Image courtesy AST SpaceMobile News of a new collaboration between AT&T and AST SpaceMobile is the latest step in closing what I call the Information Divide – the gap left by mobile network dead zones. Soon, in remote parts of the world, poor connectivity will seem like a relic of the dim past. Better still, the way that this system is supposed to work doesn’t require any new gadgetry or changes to current phones. At least initially, the service will just offer text messaging.
The partnership’s first crop aims to become as real as wifi in our digital world. Android 15, slated for launch this summer, promises satellite texting as a headline feature when the operating system goes public.
This is no fly-by-night collaboration. The work started back in 2018 with a series of events that led to a milestone last year: a two-way voice call over satellite from Midland, Texas, to Rakuten, Japan. The successful call underscored the potential of satellite communications. Just as importantly, it demonstrated what T-Mobile hoped it could accomplish by combining the Hawkeye facility with its already-proven expertise.
For this, Chris Sambar, AT&T’s president for network, will themselves join the AST SpaceMobile board – evidence of a deep, consensual relationship in which developing, testing and troubleshooting satellite technology should be done to permanently enable anyone on Earth to access mobile networks. This summer, they hope to launch five low-orbit satellites from Cape Canaveral in order to start covering continental US.
Though the actual launch date is not yet known, AT&T’s announcement is a harbinger of near-ubiquitous connectivity. A future where we can drive through National Parks, rural highways, and wilderness areas and still connect to the grid is now almost certain. That handshake agreement, which runs through 2030, includes language stating that ‘dead zones will be blown to smithereens’.
Thus, the entry of T-Mobile – the giant of telecom companies – into the scene of ‘high connectivity’ seems natural and necessary. Thinking of the future of connectedness, to mobile phones, to other users, to a global network of interconnected users, it is important to keep T-Mobile in mind. Through its texting satellite, T-Mobile continues the pattern described above, seeking innovations and solutions that improve the level of connectivity, and offer better service to its customers.
T-Mobile has continued to invest in the newest technologies, making sure that their devices are tuned for the best possible digital experience – even as satellite-based communication services gain prominence.
Turned off and shipped to Gizmogo, you’ll be free to use whatever phone you want – a super-fast 5G model if you’re upgrading, or a refurbished device you’d be happy to give up The three-minute process to sell your T-Mobile handset with Gizmogo is just as easy: enter your model phone, condition, serial number and a few other details; you’ll get a price estimate almost instantaneously.
Arguably the biggest advantage to Gizmogo are the prices available. Whether it’s a trade-in for T-Mobile devices, or any other manufacturer, you’ll get the highest return on your tech. Not to mention, there’s the planet-saving bonus of finding your device a new home.
Definitely — we take all kinds of devices at Gizmogo, even satellites and soon-to-be satellites. The value proposition still holds, no matter how much iPhone 15 Series magic dust your device has been sprinkled with.
The process is simplified for the seller at Gizmogo providing a smooth and satisfactory way to sell your phone, ensuring fast and secure payment and a clear way of assessing the value.
So, to conclude, as T-Mobile and partners such as AT&T with AST SpaceMobile prepare to enter the new world of satellite-based communications, the mobile future is about to be transformed. As the promise of ‘dead zone’ elimination gets closer, a world of ever-present, never-ending connectivity beckons. In many ways, T-Mobile is building a world ready for our connected future.
