With console gaming still drawing huge audiences, the latest news from the video game galaxy has gamers on the edge of their seats. An FPS called Starship Troopers: Extermination, based on the legendary cult classic Starship Troopers films, hasn’t just been lingering in early access limbo, but is now primed for release on consoles. With all due respect to Space Invaders, this is a universe reserved for shooting alien bugs in your living room.
Ooh, there’s been a lot of noise about Starship Troopers: Extermination, and I’m heartened to be able to report that the game, which has been in early access for a while, has now said goodbye to its early adopters, and is preparing to take as many frag grenades as it wants right into the bosom of console owners. The game is due out on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 11 October 2022, and it’s also adding a star-studded single-player campaign to the mix.
Starring Casper Van Dien, who reprises his role as Johnny Rico from the original movies, the campaign launch trailer isn’t just a nostalgia trip. The game will reportedly have 25 missions for players and their NPC allies to navigate, and a second chapter will be released after launch.
Cross-play is a surefire way to get games fans who might otherwise be rivals to unite And, as if that wasn’t enough, the game will support cross-play at launch – a godsend to friends who own different consoles. The publisher has further tantalised fans by revealing details of a significant update arriving at the end of June.
Starship Troopers: Extermination is built for co-op PvE gameplay, and features drop-in/drop-out gameplay for up to 16 players as you lay waste to waves of alien bugs. It not only captures the spirit of Verhoeven’s movies, but improves on them. With multiple PvE modes available, you’ll have plenty to sink your teeth (or guns) into.
And while the early-access review dinged it on a moderately positive score, the consensus is: Starship Troopers: Extermination could turn into the best bug-stomping game out there. The addition of consoles could be the pivot that brings everything to fruition, expand the user base, and tap into the passion of a console community.
It’s a tricky transition — movie to game — when done poorly, but Starship Troopers: Extermination does feel like a faithful capture of the film’s spirit with its own distinctive flavour. From frantic alien battles to brotherhood-in-arms scenes with your troop, the game is prepping to land on consoles and give kids a chance to ride their spaceships and blast some bugs.
The story of getting the game published also marks an important milestone for Knights Peak as MY.GAMES’ European label, setting up the team to pursue more ambitious projects in future.
While the gaming landscape has shifted dramatically, consoles have cemented their place in the congested market of digital entertainment. For 30 years now, consoles play a central role in entertainment inside of living rooms. Playing on consoles does something for us that no other gaming technology can do. There’s the quality of the graphics. Then there’s the simplicity of the install. And now there’s cross-play, which makes consoles more connected than ever, mitigating platform divides while uniting the gaming community across competing systems.
The arrival of the console title Starship Troopers: Extermination onto consoles marked a new era for both the franchise and the gaming community. In the console version, you get all of the great gameplay that you love plus cross-play functionality between consoles. And like the movies, you can now bring all of your friends into the action and rewrite history – but this time, you can control your character and how they fight the bugs. Armed with a console controller, you’ll finally have a shot at becoming one of the heroes starring in the next great saga.
