Fan speculation is rampant ahead of the PlayStation State of Play May 2024, a showcase event for upcoming games that SONY plans to release later this year or the year afterward. Current expectations are that the event will showcase what the company is planning for gamers in the immediate period. In the countdown to the event, it’s hard not to get excited about what SONY has planned to wow gamers old and new. There’s abuzz about gamers eagerly anticipating new titles by high-profile studios as well as potential updates on various live-service games. Fans can expect this to be one of gaming’s biggest events of the year.
Scheduled to go live at 6 p.m. EDT/3 p.m. PDT, the event will be broadcast on official PlayStation YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok channels so that no one misses out on the action. Jon Edwards states that the show will be showcasing 14 games, of which seven are launching later this year from PlayStation Studios.
Two spotted include Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games, and a multiplayer Horizon title from Guerrilla Games, while the new studios have big plans for Fairgame$ from Haven Studios and Concord from Firewalk Studios. Still, the event will not just be about certain titles. Because SONY aspires to extend its presence in the live-service space, expect the show to be populated by big strides in that direction. Bungie’s new Marathon will likely be more than just an announcement: there will be detailed glimpses of what live-service offerings will look like through the eyes of SONY.
The ‘showcase’ is being billed as more than just a roll call of ‘upcoming’ games: there’ll be a rundown of ‘new’ projects currently being worked on by PlayStation Studios, and news of ‘the latest’ from its second-party partners. PlayStation is also teasing the ‘first look’ at newly announced games, so this could include an unveiling of the remakes of Konami’s Silent Hill 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, both due for release this year and much hoped for by fans of those earlier titles.
Just days after the State of Play, Konami will be pre-empting the VGA’s with its second livestream event in the Silent Hill Transmission series, which is set to delve into the game-world of Silent Hill and announce the next game in the franchise and possibly even the film Return to Silent Hill, promising to further enrich the lore and legacy of Silent Hill.
As I anxiously watch the counter click down towards the livestream, it’s safe to say that the gaming community has begun to quiver in anticipation as to what SONY has meticulously prepared for this presentation. This is not a showcase, but the launch of a new era that is poised to once again raise the bar of what’s possible in gaming.
SONY indeed employs a novel strategy, and it clearly involves keeping on top of developments and trying its best to innovate on the PlayStation brand. In 1994, SONY introduced the PlayStation, after having helped revolutionise how we play games with their early groundbreaking PlayStation projects, and now through the innovation of a new generation of gaming, the PlayStation 5. The real purpose of events such as State of Play is, therefore, to showcase new PlayStation games and projects, but also to reestablish their bond with their community. In other words, through events such as State of Play, SONY is demonstrating its commitment to gamers, delivering an experience that is unprecedented.
So, with State Play May 2024 and beyond in our sights, SONY is again a pioneer in gaming, with gamers everywhere invited to be part of the evolving spectacle that is our expanding digital future.
