Sony’s shift is yet another major step in the ongoing blurring of the line between console and PC gaming. SONY’s long-awaited PSVR 2 PC adapter, which not only enables previously inaccessible cross-play via SteamVR but also loads VR content from Steam onto PSVR 2’s content menu, was officially released a few days ago. One of the main reasons I’m keen to try out Google’s new VR headset is that PSVR 2 owners can now gain access to a whole world of SteamVR games, many of which are not available on PlayStation.
In an official PlayStation Blog post, SONY announced the release of a PSVR 2 PC adapter, an important development for the future of VR gaming. The $59.99 / £49.99 adapter will be released on 7 August, and when it does, PSVR 5 headset owners will be able to access the massive library of SteamVR games. The adapter will be available to purchase exclusively from PlayStation Direct or in selected retailers.
Going down this path will require a DisplayPort cable that is DisplayPort 1.4-compliant and will be necessary to connect your gaming PC to the PSVR 2 headset to get everything set up (this cable can be purchased separately). Obtaining this and the adapter should set you up for a quick and easy setup. Download the SteamVR and PSVR 2 apps on Steam and follow through the initial setup and your PC will open up an infinite world of VR gaming.
SONY adds that you should make sure that your PC is ready for PSVR 2 games: minimum system requirements include a Windows 10 64-bit / Windows 11 64-bit operating system, an Intel Core i5-7600 / AMD Ryzen 3 3100 processor or later, and at least 8GB of RAM. Your graphics card should be NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 or later, your PC should support DisplayPort 1.4, USB direct connections, and Bluetooth 4.0 or later.
For PSVR 2 owners who were stuck with a small selection of PS5-exclusive games on their new headset, like yourself, the PSVR 2 PC adapter opens up your gaming library to the SteamVR universe. If you’ve been patiently waiting for Alyx to come to PlayStation, your wait is over – plus, you now have access to thousands of other games as well. $59.99 / £49.99 is a lot, especially considering you’d presumably already spent hundreds of dollars on your PSVR 2 headset. But it’s worth it for the incredible number of new games you’ll get to play.
Thankfully, following on from the aforementioned announcement, SONY made the decision to discount the price of the PSVR 2 headset by $100 therefore lowering the price to $549.99 / £529.99. This discount is part of PlayStation’s Days of Play event. Starting on 1 June and running until 12 June, VR gamers and enthusiasts may be able to get the PSVR 2 headset for less money. If you’ve had the PSVR 2 headset on your wishlist, this could be the perfect moment to snag the headset for a discounted price to line up your VR gaming pursuits for the future with this adapter.
As you can see, SONY is continuing to innovate and break new ground in gaming technology. In recent months they announced the forthcoming PSVR2 PC adapter which demonstrates their commitment to enabling you to play with a VR headset and controllers on your PC as well as on your PS5 console. SONY is one of the world’s leading technology companies. As well as games, they make electronics, entertainment and financial services products. They were founded in Tokyo in 1946 and have since grown into a global presence whose technologies have become an integral part of our digital lives. Check out their PSVR2 technology, coming soon.
All in all, SONY’s PSVR 2 PC adapter announcement is a big step forward in the close convergence of console and PC gaming. It opens up a world of VR gaming to PlayStation 5 owners, while also offering access to thousands of titles available on SteamVR. SONY is still at the cutting edge of the gaming industry and still doubling down on its innovative approach, which has defined the company for decades. SONY’s PSVR 2 PC adapter makes the VR gaming experience so much richer for all gamers.
