SONY’s announcement is one of the most significant PC gaming has seen in a minute. The company revealed that it’s releasing an adapter that will finally let games run on the PlayStation VR2, the next-gen virtual reality headset that uses the PlayStation 5 as its primary computer. Until now, you’ve needed that console to experience the VR2’s features, such as eye-tracking, ultranarrow field of view, or haptic feedback. Either SONY forgot that VR2’s fans have similar VR systems or the company believes many would like to try a new sort of VR on the PlayStation. At some point in 2023 or 2024, it will be possible to hook up a VR2 headset to any appropriate Windows PC. That changes everything – and I mean everything.
On 7 August, PC gamers will have a new kind of controller for their games: the PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter. What could be so complicated about a simple dongle? But simple it is not. With this little gadget, gamers could open access to worlds beyond their PlayStation. The PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter is available for $59.99 / €59.99 / £49.99. When plugged into the PlayStation VR2 headset, the adapter will connect over a USB-C cable to a Windows PC. From that moment on, select PC VR games will be accessible to the PS VR2 headset (more details). What makes the VR2 PC Adaptor so special? It is not a mere bridge device; it actively reconstructs connection over the web, so the PS VR2 headset can now interact with content from other gaming devices including AR and VR headsets.
The cool thing about this innovation is it’s a simple setup, but it works really well. The DisplayPort 1.4 input from the PS VR2 headset plugs into a PC with a USB input so the two can talk to each other, and it works with a minimal amount of setup, which can just be installing the Sony PlayStation VR2 app (which is compatible with Steam VR for the time being). In doing so, SONY is not only adding another use case for the PS VR2 headset, thereby expanding its appeal, but they are also adding some of the PS VR2’s best features to the Steam VR gaming world.
That’s not to say that the adapter will be free of limitations. Some of the PlayStation VR2’s most desirable features, including HDR, feedback in the headset, and eye-tracking are all limited to the console version. These features require connection to both the DualSense and the PlayStation 5. Universal support for both adaptive triggers and haptic feedback outside of the rumble feature are also exclusive to the console version. Nevertheless, with the adapter, the PlayStation VR2 becomes a new technology, with thousands more SteamVR titles, massively increasing its library of titles and potential user base.
While you’ll want top-of-the-line hardware to run your titles at the highest possible settings, SONY has made it clear what hardware is required to enjoy this next level of VR: ideally, a GeForce RTX 3060 or AMD Radeon RX 6600XT graphics card, and Bluetooth support 4.0 or newer for cracking the VR lenses. That way, all your virtual worlds can look and feel as they’re supposed to. It also has a built-in fan, meaning it doesn’t need any external power. Some of the hardware specifications are still a mystery, though.
In a more aggressive effort to close the gap between console and PC gaming, and in a more defensive move to attract more gamers and software developers to its platform, SONY has announced that the PS VR2 comes with a PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter. Now that’s art imitating life imitating art. The PlayStation VR2 is not only a magnificent addition to the gaming console ecosystem but SONY’s smart move to avert a missed opportunity.
Linking PlayStation VR2 with PC gaming provides access to a wealth of virtual reality experiences that aren’t available to PlayStation users. Unlike the original PlayStation VR product, linking the new headset to a suitable PC opens up a whole world of SteamVR titles, allowing SONY to essentially provide a playground of experiences and adventures.
Courtesy SONY/Marvel EntertainmentHere, SONY is blazing another trail with its new PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter, which seems set to transform the outlook of virtual reality gaming. It will not only boost demand for the PlayStation VR2, it sets the stage for more gaming innovations that can make gaming on the console and on the PC almost indistinguishable.
There is a quiet creative engine of thought at the heart of every great tech innovation – and SONY, as a name, is synonymous with success at the cutting edge of gaming. With every PlayStation release, SONY ups the stakes and drops new products into the gaming world, from the PlayStation VR2 with its new PC adapter to everything else we have coming in the forecast, showing that SONY’s philosophy is still to enrich its user's experience by embracing technology.
