Kept dangling, all of us have been eagerly awaiting the return of one of gaming’s most iconic characters, Snake, and now Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is finally almost here. The project has been shrouded in speculation and rumor, like the stealthy antics of its titular protagonist, before bursting forth into the light of an official announcement. A remake of the PlayStation 2 classic, and one of the highpoints of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, it’s no surprise that expectations are high. However, following Hideo Kojima’s departure from Konami, there was much trepidation about the project under a new development team, but Konami’s confidence may be the wave that turns this tide of skepticism as we countdown to this Monster’s revelation.
Although details about the date of release remain a secret, there’s little doubt that the world of gaming will catch up with the monster in 2024. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. Breathe. I can’t wait to hear more.
On the way to being playable on all current-gen platforms – PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam – Metal Gear Solid Delta has never been more inviting. The thought of getting lost in these lusher jungles, spying on enemies on every conceivable console, is as tantalising as ever.
The company’s legendary producer, Hideo Kojima, had suddenly left Konami, and nobody knew exactly how this new Metal Gear Solid would be completed, keeping the series the successful it has become. Thankfully, alongside Konami’s development team, the series was handed over to Virtuos. Now we can relax, the monster is in good hands – and the sequel will be everything Metal Gear Solid has come to be.
The lengthy cinematic trailer had lush jungle vistas all over it, but no signs of actual gameplay. Then, the first official trailer, released at the Xbox Games Showcase, mixed cinematics with glimpses of actual gameplay. Crucially, the use of the original game’s audio helps the remake become more than just a shot-for-shot retelling; the heart of Metal Gear Solid lives on as a foundation for a game whose visuals and mechanics promise to be better.
This brief glimpse of gameplay showed a whole host of stealth skills, but also, crucially, the return of camouflage – Snake’s ability to blend into his surroundings and become invisible to his enemies in his attempt to remain undetected. Similarly, you will still be able to make death-from-above assassinations on unsuspecting enemies, or you can opt for face-to-face CQC action. The tactical espionage action that Metal Gear Solid has become famous for will be present in MGS5, and you – the player – will decide how to approach any given mission.
Details such as a release window (2024) and pre-order information are non-existent. But fans are ready to pounce on opportunities to play their way back into one of gaming’s most compelling stories.
In conclusion, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater isn’t a mere remake. It’s a monument to a franchise that has entranced millions with its complex narrative, innovative gameplay and iconic characters. Under the auspices of Virtuos and Konami’s R&D team, the project hopes to honour the legacy of the original while bringing Snake’s compelling tale to a new generation of players when it releases in 2024. The monster of nostalgia and innovation, cloaked in the guise of a bear, is seemingly ready to lash out yet again.
