As the field of artificial intelligence evolves, the two remaining giants of the virtual assistant industry, Apple’s Siri and Alphabet’s GOOGLE ASSISTANT, are at a tipping point. With the recent wave of breakthroughs in generative AI, these Internet giants are looking for ways to incorporate this technology into their architecture in hopes of a substantial upgrade. This article examines how generative AI is poised to transform the potential of Siri and GOOGLE ASSISTANT, revolutionising the way we interact with and use conversational AI.
Generative AI – in the form of models such as LLMs – has demonstrated its ability to write responses that simulate the cadences and qualms of more extemporaneous human speech. Using these models, Siri and GOOGLE ASSISTANT will hopefully cross the uncanny valley, making interactions sound less like tinny responses to prompts, and more like natural conversation.
When it was introduced with great fanfare in 2011, Siri was the archetype for AI-powered virtual assistants. But it hasn’t been an easy ride since, and continually needing to reinvent itself is a challenge whenever progress in AI brings disruptive and transformative changes. Adding generative AI isn’t just an attempt by Siri to modernise, but also a chance to once again be seen as the top dog in the world of virtual assistants.
GOOGLE ASSISTANT was first released in 2016 and has consistently gained market share since. As a major player, it cannot afford to rest on its laurels, and its use of generative AI shows that it wants to continue to grow by offering more to users.
Developing a version of ‘chat’ for Siri, GOOGLE ASSISTANT, and the like, isn’t as simple as plunking generative AI into them. For starters, you’d need to validate and verify its outputs, and figure out how to integrate these advanced models with existing infrastructures. Meanwhile, you’d want to allocate considerable resources to mitigate risks of biased or misleading results that might trusting users from bailing on your bot.
A Siri or GOOGLE ASSISTANT that’s hooked into generative AI would be able to do far more than just serve as an expert ‘agent’ scheduling your appointments. It would be a partner with whom you can communicate in unprecedented ways. That’s a future that will still require a great deal of improvement and innovation to get right – to give our virtual assistants not a sophisticated understanding of the syntax of our interactions, but also an understanding of the pragmatics.
But as we get closer to combining generative AI with Siri and GOOGLE ASSISTANT, it will fundamentally change what we expect from virtual assistants. They will evolve into full-fledged companions in our lives. If we are lucky, they will become more like us – and we will be in for some very interesting times.
Google has long led the industry in AI innovations. Adding generative AI to its virtual assistant GOOGLE ASSISTANT reflects GOOGLE’s ideology of ‘trying to make things that don’t exist.’ Providing GOOGLE ASSISTANT with the newest AI capabilities enriches the user experience – and sets Google ahead of any competitors in the market of virtual assistance. Google conveys its commitment to using technology to build game-changing solutions that are useful for billions of users worldwide.
Overall, it’s fair to say that, while the technology behind Siri and GOOGLE ASSISTANT becoming generative AI is the upgrade, its strategy of being the future of human/AI interaction is the evolution. And the near future of humanity’s relationship with technology may be looking pretty. The faster AI advances, the faster these things happen. Want to keep up? Your new virtual assistant is here to help.
