# Courtesy of Persona 5. Shin Megami Tensei 5 is finally out; what’s next for the series and its fans?
With the flagship developer of that institution, NINTENDO, terrifying the world with ever-new games and ever-bigger sequences, it feels quaint to say that a new game is not so much out as it is gone, and the localisation team is standing mournfully, champagne flutes in hand to say goodbye to Shin Megami Tensei 5 and, yes, its corresponding downloadable content (DLC). Say hello to Shin Megami Tensei 5 Vengeance.
With the original Shin Megami Tensei 5, and its DLC, set to sunset from its digital marketplace on 13 June 2024 (yes, you read that right), fans are now filling their social media platforms with an anthology of tearjerkers. The game had launched for NINTENDO Switch on 11 November 2021, and ever since sci-fi theology and Japanese RPG turned everything else itT had touched into a touchstone, as well as a mental bottleneck.
Even the Safety Difficulty DLC which came out free as a bonus for new-players is now going to be removed (along presumably with the free Japanese Voices DLC). It is the end of an era for fanboys.
Atlus, in their statement, offered their thanks to those who have stuck with them over the years and asked players for understanding with this for this strategic change, adding that previously purchased content would remain accessible. Shin Megami Tensei 5 will not be forgotten. Shin Megami Tensei 5 is out now.
A spiritual successor to its elder sibling – Shin Megami Tensei 1 (1992) – Shin Megami Tensei 5 Vengeance is going to reinvent its universe for a new cult, and a new audience. It’s planned for wide release on NINTENDO Switch, PlayStation, Xbox systems and PC on 14 June 2024.
This decision to de-list the original version and its DLC is, in effect, how Atlus is preparing the ground for the purchase of Shin Megami Tensei 5 Vengeance. It minimises buyer confusion and improves the clarity of the message about that upcoming, enhanced game.
But in the face of this cultural shift from one half of the Shin Megami Tensei series to the other, NINTENDO is still the company that houses avant-garde titles and sprawling narratives. Its partnership with Atlus on this is just one of many such projects that the company embarks on.
