Amid this dystopian landscape of online playgrounds transformed into battlegrounds for child safety, Roblox’s newest initiative echoes with a collective sigh of relief from nervous parents around the world. So just what does the most recent update to the metaverse’s biggest gaming autonomous state look like? And, more importantly, does it add up to enough to convince worried parents to set their child free? Here’s the new, improved Roblox.
Roblox, a behemoth of the world of tween game-creation and online communities, is rolling out new child safety features. As Bloomberg reports, those new features include a host of new accounts ‘designed for parents – including a window into their child’s life’ and updates that soon will make parental permission the key to using the platform for those under 13 years of age. ‘This group of children will be limited to parental-consent registered accounts or limited versions of registered accounts that restrict certain features or game modes,’ the company says. Roblox’s recent turn to increased oversight is a turning point in its own saga with child safety.
At a fundamental level, Roblox is far from a game – or, at least, there is much more to it than a game. It is a sprawling creative ecosystem of people interacting with one another, with the trouble caused by this expansiveness manifesting itself in its lack of ability to monitor both content and interactions. With the advent of parent accounts, Roblox has made a concerted effort to close that gap by providing guardians with a toolset to bring them into the realm of their children’s digital spaces. The question remains, however, how effective these tools will be. Will they solve Roblox’s problems with respect to the safety of children, or are they simply the first link in a long and challenging chain?
The digital age offers unprecedented access to information and connections. But it’s far from risk-free, especially for its youngest users. This year, a series of high-profile allegations in Florida and lawsuits accusing Roblox of allowing its audience to be exposed to harm have brought much of the hidden world of online gaming out into the open. As the company moves closer to what appears to be a safer and more controlled experience, Roblox points to challenges that all digital platforms face today.
Roblox’s effort to make its platform safer for children is a noble one. But it also begs the broader question: does it work? The platform’s open-ended nature has opened it up to almost infinite exploration – but also vulnerabilities. As consoles and digital existence become ever-more entwined with children’s lives, the onus is on companies such as Roblox to take the complete safety of users very seriously indeed. But can any platform offer safety, in a digital landscape that never stops growing?
Reactions from within the Roblox community – including parents, players and developers – have been mixed. For some, these changes represent a long-awaited response to growing worries about online safety for children and teens. But to others, they represent an overdue first step, and one that, while worthwhile, might not be enough to address the problem at its core. Much of Roblox’s success will lie in the execution of its strategy and in the company’s willingness to adjust to threats as they emerge in a rapidly evolving digital environment.
Now that Roblox has revealed the measure of its ambitions, it’s up to everyone else to see where their limits lie. If the new measures are successful, Roblox could have the potential to better itself – as well as help to set an industry-wide standard for how the digital world should be safe for children. The steps that Roblox is taking to make itself a safer destination show that there’s a greater realisation that we can have protected spaces online. But the road is long and full of potholes. The journey from how we use technology today to how we all use it tomorrow will continue to depend on innovation, monitoring – and the collective resolve of many communities.
No longer just gaming consoles, they are gateways to online worlds such as Roblox The role of consoles in Roblox’s safety story is crucial, and it serves to remind us that responsibility for the safety of children online goes further than just the game developers. After all, consoles are the gateways to the gaming world; their creators have a stake in the safety of children online, too.
It is incumbent on manufacturers and platform operators to ensure that their systems are safe places for play – by offering strong parental controls, screening content and partnering with developers to elevate the role of children’s welfare. The rising tide of child-friendly consoles will be central to the wider mission of child internet safety.
It will be through these community groups, working hand in hand with a constantly improving Roblox safeguards and continued console upgrades, that future, safer online experiences will be born – for our children and those to come.
