The communication breadth of the digital universe has never been so celebrated or contested. Imagine all the ‘seas’ of online copy, now viewable thanks to translation that was once unimaginably not-enough. Courtesy Microsoft EDGE. The new frontier here is all yours to take in.Beneath its bombastic headlines, Microsoft EDGE is actually quietly honing a real-time video translation feature that will transcend language in your browser, video we’re now testing in the Canary Channel.
Microsoft EDGE, meanwhile, is preparing to unveil a function that will translate the audio from any soundlike video on the web into a suite of languages. The feature will, to begin with, translate between English, Spanish or Korean to English, German, Spanish, Hindi, Italian or Russian, embracing all the usual suspects. Over time, its reliability will be fine-tuned. But the experiment has been launched. Microsoft appears to want a common digital reality.
According to one observer, Leo Varela: ‘The video translation feature in EDGE is definitely still baby steps, with plenty of bugs and stability issues ( EDGE crashed a few times when trying to get this video to work, etc), but a brief sample does show that we’re definitely a step closer to breaking down language boundaries on the web. Content for the masses, independent of the masses’ language.
The ability to see on a platform – as opposed to build for it – means you can translate EDGE’s video into any browser. That’s not true of some platform features, but in this one characteristic EDGE makes a leap toward being able to be used in other places, on other websites – potentially even on YouTube itself, the world’s second most popular website. And like that, one leap at a time, the web begins to feel global in a new way, making its language a bottleneck for neither knowledge nor amusement.
This sort of feature will require users to download and install a language pack, which thankfully, can be done once and then used again without need for further downloads.
And from a personal point of view, this particular insight about what real-time translation of EDGE means to me strikes a real chord. I’ve studied languages (notably French) with relative success all my life, but the written test never felt like the real thing. The spoken word felt forbidden; it was as though I’d been given a key to the French language only to have a single word blocked with a Nack Glue stick. Soon, EDGE’s headline feature will be the sort of real-time translation that opens up the world of a French radio show or podcast, an interview with a film director, or even a political discourse in French into a gesture of translation that bridges the gaps between linguistic enclaves.
But its status as the default browser (and a potential portal into Microsoft’s broader digital experience) is about more than one choice versus another. EDGE, which is built on the open-source Chromium project, represents an outward-looking, egalitarian vision of the web at its best, following the bulk of modern web standards while still offering innovation (or at least a preview of what it might do as others catch up) by introducing things such as real-time video translation, all in the interest of improving how we experience the web at large.
This feature makes EDGE not so much a portal into the web as a portal across the language divides that splinter our experience: the gateway to a path that fosters a spirit of accessibility, an ethos in which the understanding of content is no longer cut off by the barriers of separate languages. This is not an improvement – it’s a revolution.
