The way we consume television has changed dramatically with the advent of new technologies. The Fetch TV company is a very important player in revising the way we use television. Fetch TV is adding free-to-air (FTA) IP channels to its TV Guide for users, so what is changing so much about this way of using television that it will change our way of consuming television forever? In this essay I will describe how this change can be seen as an improvement. Also, I will explain how Fetch TV improved the flow of free-to-air for people who can’t use regular FTA broadcast.
Firstly, let’s go into how Fetch TV will change the way people use TV with the introduction of FTA IP channels, thanks to the Skystar 2 streaming service, this will allow users to have the same quality of image than cablenet services, such as Foxtel, but with free content. It is revolutionary because the users will be able to use the service without an antenna and if they ever loose the signal, they will be able to watch the same content when they have reception again. This can make them never miss their favourite programme. The new FTA TV guide will allow users to organize all the traditional TV channels into a clear list whilst the FTA IP extracts will be in the FTA channels list. Therefore, consumers will no longer worry about losing the signal whereas before they would need to have at least three antennas.
However, traditionally watching free-to-air content relied on having a old-fashioned antenna – and there are many households where this bit of hardware is somewhat dated. Here’s where Fetch TV changes all that – providing the opportunity to watch free-to-air IP services direct into the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG). The consumer benefit is that there is no requirement for an antenna to view FTA programs, nor is there any need to fret about poor reception as has been an issue in the past with FTA viewing. This step by bringing FTA channels into the EPG is also a significant one, as it ensures ease of viewing and accessibility of material and that television can be as simple as possible.
Until now, viewers who want to access free-to-air live shows (traditional broadcasts, but streamed over the internet as ‘live IP feeds’) via the Fetch TV service had to navigate three or more steps first – find the right app, open it, and then scroll to find the live IP feed they want. Now, with Fetch TV's enhancement, these streams will be available in the EPG directly. This is a significant change: on one hand it's a functionality enhancement, but arguably more importantly it's also a user experience enhancement – the simple convenience of one-click access to free-to-air live content.
As former CEO Scott Lorson points out, Fetch TV provides basic households struggling with FTA reception, such as those in digital terrestrial black spots and in residential units without FTA, or those with a room without an aerial socket, the ability to access these FTA services via IP streams. Fetch TV opens up a segment of the TV environment that is critically important as it means that more families in Australia can get the complete television experience without the restrictions of a traditional broadcast approach.
Although opening up FTA IP channels is a game-changer, it’s not always easy in practice. Fetch TV admits that the IP feeds are not exactly the same as terrestrial: ‘We do not guarantee that you will receive a regional feed, regional programmes or sport and programming blackouts for some events and programmes due to digital rights limitations’, adding that ‘seasonal content is not guaranteed’ and ‘markets will generally not include sports streaming’. Still, Fetch TV’s push to promote wider television regulation and expand access to regional news indicates a fight for accessible and equitable digital terrestrial broadcasting.
There’s no doubt that Lorson is looking beyond what’s on offer today, with nowhere else to go, but fully intends to embrace the future of FTA viewing, according to Dean. Lorson believes that there will come a time when FTA IP feeds, or ‘digital twins’, will have a place within the wider broadcast environment, and that Fetch TV is well placed to be a gatekeeper that can help ensure that both key channels and popular sport content remains accessible for FTA users. It’s an upbeat message that hints at the flexibility Fetch TV has for its business model, but also at the adaptability of FTA content in a digital world.
Here, ‘open’ connotes the removal of impediments, and more accessible, open opportunities for viewing television that makes these services more inclusive for end users. Fetch TV’s incremental steps are doing exactly that; it is opening up the television terrain, making access to free-to-air signal not dependent on infrastructure such as antennas or the confines of conventional broadcast transmissions. This is where the real work — the true innovations — of keeping up with rapidly shifting consumer needs is taking place.
