It’s not just the battle for the pride of ‘being more real’, though. Innovations in sports simulations keep painting a picture of the future of sports video games; one that is more about immersion than fast arcade-style gameplay. The reality is that sports simulations don’t capture the full reality of the sport – they boil it down to two players facing off on a completely artificial screen, controlled by your thumbs. But Madden NFL has quietly taken some big strides in getting closer to that reality than its biggest rival, Madden NFL 24, and it’s changing the sports-simulation landscape in exciting ways.
The new user interface design in Madden NFL 25 stands out. The maker of the series successfully eliminated the clunky and lag-laden menus in dramatic fashion. Everything looks sharp and performs better than ever. This might be nit-picky to some, but to longtime players of the series, it feels like a complete overhaul. The football video game has come a long way in terms of how menus handle and look. We are reminded of EA’s dedication to the series by these changes.
Madden NFL 25’s revolution is what happens between the lines, however. This version of Madden, as have all previous versions of Madden, strives to reflect the reality of football, and they have succeeded. The feel of the game is more responsive and nuanced. The animations seem more real and the AI has been improved. Everything from the draft experience to the character interaction goes into offering a closer experience to watching football.
Most impressive is the draft experience. You feel like a real NFL player, receiving a hug from the commissioner Roger Goodell and getting your jersey thrown at your head. This is something that fans dream of, so it’s a fitting addition. Customising your player is already made very detailed in Madden NFL 25. I remember creating a player on Madden Marciano, then only used for one game. It sucked and yes, he got injured. But now with the detail available in customising your player, you can shape your NFL life to your liking however you want.
Professional-calibre innovations have been made to the breadth and depth of the gameplay themselves, making it easier to control your team, as well as more strategically rich, in that you can now select coverage shells, shift O-line protections, and there are new mini-games in Franchise mode that train your players. These adjustments don’t merely add variations to the game, they change how it can appropriately be played, prompting players to think more and more like an NFL coach.
The game is a visual feast. The character modelling is superb, the animations are outstanding, and the production values for all the game modes are so good that even the stage set of the draft baffles you with its complexity, so much so that when they’re done announcing the picks, they actually have to show you how to get out from underneath the centre of the stage without smacking your head on the set’s ceiling. There are so many little details to admire when it comes to the game. It is historically accurate, which makes for a really bold test of any video game claiming to recreate a sport. The site is packed with disclaimers. Madden’s makers can’t guarantee that you won’t feel cheated by the simulation. Which in turn leads to the curious fact that playing Madden NFL 25 can, as well as being great fun, provide hours of insight as you try to plan your approach to the game. This is in spite of the fact that you will notice a level of cheating from the AI-controlled teams that dwarfs your own attempts to manipulate the outcome.
Having new commenters in the booth gives a breath of fresh air to the broadcast and spices up the game, voicing things in ways that tired old lines and catchphrases never quite did. All of these additions get at what I have identified as the most important quality of Madden NFL 25: an in-game atmosphere that makes you feel like you truly are watching the NFL.
I could go on about Madden NFL 25. It’s not just another iteration. It’s a genuine leap ahead for the franchise, addressing long-standing complaints while also making several important new innovations. It proves that, as the years go by, Madden can still improve in leaps and bounds when it listens to us.
Ironically, even though this article contained a tremendous amount of detail about the gameplay, the design and the improvements of Madden NFL 25, it was notably missing a dedicated section on the tactical consequences of the game’s ‘move’ feature. Game reviews like Coleman’s tend to highlight how much better each new version of a game plays, and how much more interesting and immersive it is to the gamer. It’s no exaggeration to say that Madden NFL 25 is the most realistic football game we’ve ever played, and it moves the bar higher for the games released in the genre in subsequent years.
Madden NFL 25 promises that players will have a football simulating experience that is significantly different and better than it was with Madden NFL 12 and Madden NFL 13. And it’s those ‘moves’ – on and off the field – that make Madden NFL 25 the type of game that makes fans feel like they’re playing the authentic Infinity Engine of sports video gaming, and takes its first steps into a bright, detailed future.
