Home sweet home but this could be a phrase that is set to change very soon. As living smarter becomes increasingly woven into our every day lives, Google Home is about to get a new update that will allow us to control our smart home appliances with a quick tap of a widget in our Android homescreen. Hold tight, this is poised to be game-changing. The new Google Home app will indeed introduce a set of widgets that will bring all your smart home controls to your fingertips.
The latest noise comes via the version 3.18.1.4 of the Google Home app, which reveals in hushed terms that it’ll soon be possible to add widgets that make controlling your smart home appliances as easy as tapping a homescreen.
Delving deeper, what we found was not just an ordinary update to an app, but one that had the power to drastically change how we interact with our smart environments. Thanks to the efforts of a busy Telegram group called Google News, the widget was out in the wild. ‘To mark a large change in the way we control our smart home, it will soon be possible to use a widget, to send an email to your smart lights, and to play music or podcasts, all through the power of this widget,’ says a voice on the Telegram channel.
But imagine if these widgets let you control your devices, actions and automations from your homescreen. They’re so versatile because you just plonk them down, choose the Google account they’re linked to (Google Home), and then select which devices you want to manage. They’re easy to customise, and you can even resize them on each line of your homescreen.
And although we might be close to this smart-control tipping point, we all need to develop generous dispositions. The feature is there, in the updated app that is awaiting a nod from Google to come alive on devices. Users may be impatient, but no one knows when the functionality will be released publicly, with excitement and curiosity in the air.
When exactly these one-tap home control widgets will officially be released in the wild is anyone’s guess. Once that functionality is in place and turned on, Google’s one-tap home controls are staring at you, waiting to bring together our all-too-fragmented smart home. We’ll see if Google will do it sooner or later. It certainly seems like it could happen soon.
It’s ultimately a platform on which to build a smart home, and to de-clutter the interfaces of everyday life. Every device connected to it can now access a layer of home automation, and the design goal is always to make controlling your smart-home environment as easy as possible. The introduction of these widgets is another step in that direction: towards simpler, better, more accessible control.
As we approach this new paradigm, we’re poised to see one-tap widget controls more integrated into our lives than the average person may think. A new era of interacting with smart technology will usher in an invaluable resource – bringing us more together than ever before.
These improvements are what the new widget system can now finally do for you, Google Home is more than just your phone’s sidekick; Google Home is meant to work diligently to simplify, improve and dare to make our homes, well … smarter. And that’s where the widgetification of our homescreens is actually yet another sign of Google’s ambition to continuously explore what can be done at the frontiers of our living rooms.
Simply put, home means having an environment customised to our individual needs, personalities and comforts. And with advances in smart technology, that concept has evolved to include a new level of interactivity and responsiveness, an automation of a sort reminiscent of sci-fi. Google Home heralds a new era in smart living, holding out a promise that control, convenience and customisation will come together to give us a whole new idea of home.
While we’re waiting for these life-changing widgets to arrive, let’s make the most of this brighter, connected living space – and let’s hope Google Home is the start of a smarter, better, more closely controlled experience that will make our homes feel perfect for us in the years to come.
