And in an age when technological growth suddenly appears to happen at warp speed, OpenAI continues to innovate on the cutting edge of AI development. Not long ago, whispers turned to gasps as OpenAI announced its latest project: a prime attempt to develop a new successor to its current superstar, GPT-4. As the clatter of news reverberates around the digital world, let’s take a look at this next phase of AI, the realisation of a prime AI model – an unparalleled innovation that could transform our relationship with machines.
The research name in this domain is OpenAI, which just announced that it has begun training a new Prime model. This is only the second one – GPT-4, the previous one, is the one OpenAI started releasing to users earlier this year. The Prime initiative isn’t the only evidence that OpenAI is still working on creating something that’s closer than anything else in the world to AGI.
In short, the anticipation surrounding the release of OpenAI’s new model is high. Expectations are high, for a big jump towards AGI. In March 2023, OpenAI announced the release of GPT-4, which enhanced and expanded the scope of human sounding responses, improving upon GPT-3. OpenAI are not stopping there: the next model that they are developing will not only be smarter than existing large models but will be safer and more secure, too.
Still, amid all the technobabble touting these breakthroughs, OpenAI repeated its commitment to safety and security. It formed a Safety and Security Committee, consisting of heavyweights working in the industry, to supervise the transition to more sophisticated AI models. It wants to lead the way, while also behaving responsibly.
We all got a glimpse of the potential in this direction with the rollout of OpenAI’s multi-modal AI, GPT-4o, which will offer a truly combined experience of text, vision and audio. This is the kind of innovation we can expect going forward, and it’s just one of many exciting possibilities for reshaping our interaction models in the AI-powered future. For example, while the creation of ChatGPT’s new ‘Sky’ voice, an AI interface in the vein of Scarlett Johansson’s digital lover in the film Her, had to be paused amid societal concerns, OpenAI’s commitment to caution and reflection is commendable.
the road to developing the next big AI model is full of adventure, with its fair share of pitfalls The fact that OpenAI is so forthright about its development process, and doesn’t shy away from vigorous debate, bodes well for a healthy evolution of the field, as it enters a more mature phase of its existence. Of course, as the prospect of AGI or something resembling it draws closer, this pressure to both move fast and also do what’s right becomes greater.
The evolution from GPT-4 to its successor also points to a key transition in the current state of AI – an era of acceleration that some believe suggests the world is on the verge of a superhuman era. Some tech industry insiders envision swift progress toward this new era, envisioning a future in which AI becomes even harder to distinguish from humans than most people already perceive it to be. At the same time, they frame the growing power of these technologies as a purely technical challenge – one that centres on devising effective strategies to attain AGI. Others raise ethical concerns about whether AI will be developed in a way that best serves people. And some paint a more dire picture – one in which either AI is deployed in ways that harm people or, conversely, people curtail the power of artificial intelligence for fear of how it might hinder or harm their lives.
When we say OpenAI is ‘prime’, we don’t just mean that it will be the best AI company in terms of pure calculation but it will be first. More important, we mean it will be first in introducing a new standard of practice for AI, one that cares about safety, security and the ethics of AI technology. This is why OpenAI is prime, and why it might just change the face of AI, for the good, in about two or three decades.
With OpenAI’s focus on innovation and ethics at the fore, we could be witnessing the initial stages of what might be the next technological singularity. Whether for good or bad, the world will never be the same. What remains to be seen is how this new chapter in AI will take our future into the unknown.
