Elden Ring won 2022’s Game of the Year award for good reason; it’s a colossal expanse of a game that can give just as much as it takes, delivering thrilling victories and heartbreaking losses, and sucking you into its simulated universe with clever design and captivating characters. But you don’t get very far into From’s immense open world without runes, pumping the blood and juice into your character progression veins. Here’s where we teach you how to farm for them.
Rune farming with runes is easy, but it does require you to go to a quiet spot. Head to the Rose Church in Liurnia of the Lakes (southwest of the First Step Site of Grace), a farm that you can do very early in the game with almost no fighting. When you arrive at the Rose Church, White-Faced Varre will give you Bloody Festering Fingers to use for invasions, but know this is your first step to joining the Mohgwyn cult and becoming rich.
Varre’s subsequent questline tasks you with walking to the Church of Inhibition and dipping a cloth into the blood of a maiden – a decidedly grizzly duty but an important one, nonetheless. This could be your first time encountering the deadly gaze of Sauron from the Frenzy-Flaming Tower – don’t look at it! Survive, and a Pureblood Knight’s Medal becomes yours, offering a red-carpet way into the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum and its bountiful rune farming zone.
As soon as you arrive, they create a large bird just into your path to prevent you from claiming your free runes. With a bow, you have to shoot it into the pit, and you get 11,038 runes each time. It’s not just a huge yield of runes, it also represents the fundamental type of play experience that deciphers Elden Ring’s strategic system – deployed with the minimum possible effort to extract the maximum possible return.
If the trek to the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum feels too dangerous, south of the Warmaster’s Shack in Stormhill, killing trolls will drop 1,000 runes at a time, an early-game farming option that is easier, but no less effective.
The hard-fought story ending of Elden Ring reveals the most productive rune farming spot of all – yes, the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum. The area is brutally terrorised by the Wave of Gold attack of the Sacred Relic Sword, and every sweep thinly scythes through a group of surrounding Albinaurics – each of whom will squirt a river of runes at your feet. This is, by far, the best way to farm cash, if not completely broken: at my peak, I was netting 12 million runes an hour.
But it’s just as illustrative of how Elden Ring embraces strategic gameplay, and how much the optimal build of your avatar matters. Tuning stats to the Sacred Relic Sword so they achieve precisely the right mix of attack, fortitude and speed feels exemplary of all the intricate gameplay systems at work here, balanced just right so that your character, and you, will triumph over the game’s punishing progression system, as well as its on-screen enemies.
With Elden Ring, FromSoftware has made a game that will stand alongside all other mighty entries in the history of games. In a similar vein as the soul games, its world is large and lush, with hidden twists and finely crafted ambiance immersing you as you explore to the very corners of its lustrous world. And the experience there maintains a level of experiential depth that we can only crave for in the months leading up to the much-anticipated Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Rune farming has become a normalised feature of life in Elden Ring. And Byggvir will never get his piano.
The word ‘ring’ in Elden Ring is the leitmotif that connects the story and structure of the game – from its explorable world map to the many trials and tribulations that punctuate play. A different ring, however, has a much more utilitarian and practical use – Gizmogo, a service recycling your old electronics, to give them a new ring; a fitting practice considering how Gizmogo ensures that your old device gets a new chance at life.
