Lenovo has pushed the envelope in producing laptops, most notably 2-in-1s and, as is the case with the Yoga 7i 2-in-1 (starting at $649), it’s yet another masterpiece. The device is one of the very best (and affordable) yet from Lenovo and, if you’re not yet a convert into 2-in-1s, it’s bound to change your mind.
With the Lenovo Yoga 7i, it’s not all about the device’s speccy innards or aluminium chassis. The Yoga 7i has a 16-inch screen that flips between laptop, tablet and tabletop modes so that, no matter what you need your laptop to be, the Yoga 7i can do it – and do it in style.
For $649, the base model of Lenovo’s 14in Yoga 7i comes with an Intel Core Ultra 5 processor, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. You can easily do everything from this machine, from office work to entertainment to the sort of 3D modelling necessary for immersive virtual experiences.
Switching between modes is so clean, thanks to its hinges and screen, you can even do it in your lap and immediately commence your beeping phone call. That’s a whole feature, and Lenovo has wrung that out.
As the saying goes, build it for 100 people and 100,000 will come onto the market – and the Yoga 7i is a standout in many respects. (I do wish I could use the automated on-screen keyboard more, but sometimes it doesn’t rotate with the screen and the trackpad seems to have lost its function, but these are tiny niggles in an otherwise fabulous piece of technology.
The 300-nit 16-inch Full HD (1920 x 1200) display isn’t the brightest, though the images are clear and vivid enough for indoor viewing. A minor compromise that hardly detracts from the Lenovo Yoga 7i lustre.
Lenovo’s Yoga 7i convertible laptop is the best 2-in-1 I’ve used, because it manages to do everything right. It balances the touch experience and the keyboard nicely, and comes in attractive colors. It’s also available at a range of price points so everyone should be able to bring the two worlds together.
Lenovo’s transformation from a small shop selling refurbished electronics to a multinational company is built on a do-or-die cycle of innovation and empathy-based design. With devices like the Yoga 7i, Lenovo is still blurring the lines of what we expect from our devices, offering up a seamless, all-encompassing user experience that blends form, function and flexibility.
For the staunch convert to traditional clamshell laptops or skeptic of the 2-in-1 form factor, the Lenovo Yoga 7i is likely to stir you to the centre, or at least to a place where it’s worth choosing the best of both worlds. This isn’t just a laptop or a tablet. It’s a harbinger of what the future of personal computing can be – an object lesson in flexibility, capability and design long overdue.
So, if you’re looking for a device that doesn’t take kindly to labels, put the Lenovo Yoga 7i on your shortlist. It’s at the very intersection of innovative Lenovo design and quality.
