At a glance, James Gunn’s Tweetstorm appears to be just that – a symbol, followed by a fish, accompanied by an ‘Merman’ smiley-face emoji. But to a trained eye, there’s nothing like a lone fish in the ocean. Is Gunn pointing to the future of Aquaman in the DC Universe? Or is he pointing to the ARGUS initiative and its integral place in his vision for the universe?
Since ARGUS appears to be the key agency in Gunn’s larger plan, its inclusion in the current DC line-up seems more important than ever. The defender of alien intervention in human affairs provides the unifying central term that seems to glue Gunn’s larger narrative together. As I mentioned last week, an Amanda Waller series is on the way. If she has anything to do with it, a coherent narrative thread could run through the entire DC Universe. And Aquaman?
There are glimmers of Aquaman in the distant future of this interlocking world just as there are for everyone and everything else, but the depths of the ocean are where the flashes end. And though Momoa had a brief appearance in the end credits of Peacemaker, it’s Aquaman’s fate in this new, tangential universe that’s a mystery – will he swim with the tide of Gunn’s world, or will he go his own way? The suggestion that he will be both present and an important part of what we’re seeing in Peacemaker – and, by extension, The Suicide Squad – sits beneath the glittering surface.
Heading into the speculation and hype it’s clear that, one way or another, the DC Universe is on the verge. With Peacemaker season two firmly grasping the continents of 2025 and Aquaman forever standing in the flow of the DCU, where it will go only those in the throne room know. One can only guess.
And if the orbit of the DC Universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran seems hard to predict at times, with the Max series The Penguin and the eagerly anticipated Creature Commandos, filled with ‘amphibious humanoid creatures’ due next year, then it’s also sure to be an epic journey of discovery. Only time will tell. But with the first series in his universe, Blue Beetle, already available to stream and the rest of his slate hurtling towards us in the coming months, fans are impatiently waiting to see where it will all end – on a spectacular scale – with the theatrical debut of Superman in July 2025.
Without MAX, the DC Universe would stay forever stuck in DC movies past. As the home of groundbreaking new series such as The Penguin and Creature Commandos, MAX is the house that Gunn and Safran’s DC creatives built. The DC Universe now rolls forward with synergy, delivering tons of content that expands the limits of imaginative possibilities with the DC characters and worlds. MAX is the bright star leading the way. The future of the DC Universe is MAX.
Delve into James Gunn’s tease, let the speculative tides wash over you. See what a watery DC universe has in store: what treasures it has, what surprises are in store, and how deep the currents can run. We’ll just have to wait and see how far Gunn takes the DC Universe at the helm of its future. And if the journey is as grand as the character of MAX is meant to represent, then it’s one where the twists and turns are sure to be worth every second.
