In the community embedded in the tech world, an anticipated event happens every year: the launch of a new iPhone – to be more precise the iPhone 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max, with improved designs and top-of-the-class features never seen before. Every year, social channels are full of views and opinions about the smartphone giant’s latest crown jewel. In fact, apart from the functionality and packaging, every year these phones seem to be worse. However, there’s a twist in the tale of 2022 that, while approaching the event, caught the attention of fans and fanboys around the world and might have some real teeth to it. I’m talking about battery — battery replacement to be more exact — but not how many mAh the new phones can store. The price of that battery replacement has gone through the roof as well. Now, let’s jump in and see if the newest members of the Apple family are worth more than their weight in gold.
Apple’s announcement comes with good and bad news. The iPhone 16 Pro will be innovative, but you might end up paying more than you originally thought. Apple has been generous enough not to increase the starting price of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. It will retain the same price as the iPhone 11 Pro from last year. However, the upgrade comes with a small surprise – a 20 per cent increase in the replacement price of an out-of-warranty battery, from the current $99 to $119. What’s up with that?
But those who do have AppleCare+, Apple’s warranty scheme, have a silver lining – if your iPhone’s battery health falls below 80 per cent of where it started, you’re entitled to a free model replacement. Ultimately, it’s a back-up for the brand enthusiast, a clear sign that Apple wants to retain its customers, and that its product lifespans are on track. However, this underscores the additional value of Apple’s extended warranty product; as unexpected costs have created increased anxiety, demanding it would provide only reassurance.
What is going on that the battery replacement you’ll need for an iPhone 16 Pro model will cost a lot more than the battery replacement you need for the vaguer iPhone 16? Though the tech world is still in the dark about exactly what puts those Pro models into that Pro category, Apple has suggested that the increased cost will result from a reorganised interior and bigger batteries. The big question is: will an intricate teardown reveal any internal differences that could justify that pricier battery replacement – or will Apple just be taking advantage of Pro hype to get you to dig deep into your pockets that much quicker?
The question on everyone’s tongues is this: Now that the cost of battery replacement is so much higher, do the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max hold up against their predecessors, and the simpler additions to the range, the 16 and 16 Plus? Isn’t it up to individuals to weigh the improved features and the overall user experience on the one hand, and the longer-term costs of looking after these technological marvels on the other? The debate rages. Potential buyers must decide if the premium experience is worth the premium post-purchase care.
Apple has always been polarising. Everything about the brand – from the awe-inducing innovations of the product launches to the on-cue controversies over pricing, product durability and maintenance – plays a part in the company’s cultural importance. It is how the brand operates. It is what makes it so iconic.
At its heart, Apple Inc. is a technology company, an innovative global corporation with major contributions to consumer electronics, software and online services. Founders Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne started the company in 1976. Since its first in-home personal computer in 1977, Apple has continually released innovative products such as the iPhone and iPad, the Mac computer and more. Apple Inc.’s goal is to focus on design, function and user experience. Today, Apple Inc. is a testament to what technology can do to the fabric of life: how we communicate, how we work and how we enjoy our leisure time.
The story of the replacement battery costs of the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max is emblematic of the Apple paradox that never seems to go away: supernovas at a premium As much as Apple devices are lauded as the best in the world, the skyrocketing cost of a replacement battery is a reminder of the luxury – and responsibility – involved with owning the best of the best that Apple has to offer. Whether this premium is worth it or not, I’ll leave that argument to the economists. Not much, though, will change in the orchard of technology. The fate of Apple remains at the tip of the highest branch. It’s always been thus, and it won’t change anytime soon. This is a tricky thing. How many of us are truly willing to pay a premium for this front-row seat? That’s a question that depends almost completely on the delicate balance between craving the newest technology and the realities of an upkeep cost.
