Where will gaming innovation take us next? Perhaps a look towards the ASUS ROG Ally – a powerful gaming handheld computer combination of full HD screen sizing and gaming laptop-type performance in a lightweight, yet alluring, package shaped for the modern gaming journey. Since the ASUS ROG Ally is already so good, surely it stands to reason that what must be good is what must improve upon what is good. So naturally, that’s exactly what a creative modder has done, by adding an additional screen to the ASUS ROG Ally, allowing it to perform double-tasking feats of hardcore gaming and multitasking leisure-dom.
The mod to give the ASUS ROG Ally a better display started at one of the most creative minds in the modding community, YesItsKira (aka Kira Patel). Kira picked out a 7-inch screen appropriate for the system, and began to plan its installation. To make room for the new screen, the modder used a saw to remove some of the plastic on the laptop’s back and the two extra HDMI and headphone jacks that the console comes with. In place of those features, this ASUS ROG Ally has a USB Type-C compatible dock for connecting the monitor to the system.
At the centre of this change is the WIMAXIT M728, a 7-inch 1024 x 600 resolution IPS LCD touchscreen display. Using a Type-C dock to replace an otherwise required couple of HDMI and USB cables was a necessity given the necessity to streamline the number of cables needed to assemble the setup. More parts of the modding process involved the use of a 3D printer, including a new back cover for the ASUS system, a shell for the second display’s outer layer, and a 360-degree hinge which allows the screen to be folded flush with the main display.

This dual-screen mod makes the ASUS ROG Ally 100 times more useful. You could play games on one screen and make meals on the other, while also working on Word documents or streaming Netflix on the third screen, or maybe even all three. The optimal use case for emulating DS games – and even emulating Wii U games, which use dual touchscreens – is a lot more fun when you can do it across three screens.
It’s easy to imagine modders taking the ASUS ROG Ally and adapting it into their own one-of-a-kind creation. The world of modding is a place of creativity and technology where modders can create personalised machines or supercharge their existing devices. The ASUS ROG Ally’s minipc capabilities put it in the sweet spot of being versatile and capable. Some mods, such as YesItsKira’s dual‑screen mod (shown below) using inexpensive off-the-shelf components and 3D printing technology, have transformed the humble gaming handheld in multiple ways.
And as portable gaming consoles such as the ASUS ROG Ally start to grow in popularity, so does demand for devices you can tinker with – whether by adding dual displays, CPUs, GPUs, RAM, storage or anything else. Not only does modding push what is possible, but it also allows for the modification of less powerful models without paying through the nose, further democratising gaming at the high end.
With its sleek design, powerful processing capabilities, and versatility unlike anything else in the market, the ASUS ROG Ally occupies the unique space between both gaming PCs and handhelds with ease, providing the best aspects of both worlds in one elegant package. We can only imagine what the follow-up, the ASUS ROG Ally 2, will bring to the table, one that will change what gamers expect to get from their handheld gaming experience.

Those inspired by the ASUS ROG Ally and its possible future will look back on this hack as an early sign of bespoke devices to come. Its minimalism and DIY nature is reminiscent of a simpler time in gaming technology and culture. Yet the hack also highlights how the past is indeed past, and that gaming is now a more serious pursuit, which should be given greater consideration. Just as the beloved Game Boy was succeeded by more sophisticated portable gaming devices, so too, perhaps, will its modern equivalent eventually be improved on by larger and more powerful gaming handhelds. For the moment, the ASUS ROG Ally and its possible future exist as a limitless realm of possibility and an exciting, ever-evolving path forward. With ASUS taking the lead, its passionate community will continue to look to the horizon for the next technological breakthrough that could finally tear down the walls preventing the true PC from fitting in one’s hand.
