Now, when Android users go to the Google Password Manager – where they can generate strong passwords, view all stored passwords, and change them if needed – they will immediately notice the change. Today, Google announced that it has given its Password Manager on Android a Material You redesign. The move aims to bring the Google account settings screen up to speed to better prepare users and secure their digital empires. Running low on time to see what the update has to offer? Not to worry, as we’ve not only outlined the new design but highlighted the key changes now in place in the Google Password Manager.
Update [5/17]: Google has rolled out a Material 3 redesign of its Password Manager for all Android users (via server-side update). The new 24.16.16 iteration of Google Play services brings a streamlined new UI that should work a treat: Just pop your phone back into your pocket after rebooting, and Android will transform itself.
A New Beginning [6/6]: Google is moving far beyond the experience of an app when it rolls out a new improved Password Manager boasting a dramatic blue Material 3 bottom bar and new design. However, in contradiction to the personified visuals it uses elsewhere, Dynamic Colour theming isn’t implemented here, where slots of blue appear providing pops of colour for the design’s visuals. But it’s clear Google is paying attention to at least some of the detail.
The revamp has streamlined the Password Manager into three distinct tabs:
It’s not just phones that have benefited from this redesign; Android tablets with landscape orientation will also get a visual improvement with a navigation rail.
Beyond aesthetics, Google has introduced several functionalities to bolster security:
This revamp is an indication that Google is taking the experience and security of users across devices very seriously. The first intentional use of Material You indeed seems to be a significant event bringing an unprecedented ease and visual clarity to the process of navigating and managing one’s passwords.
