At this point in time, when all spheres of human activity have been affected by rapid technology advances, Google has once again taken the lead by unveiling Google Gemini’s PH-LLM Personal Health Large Language Model to transform the future of giving personal advice on health and fitness by providing individualised feedback based on users’ unique needs.
What Google did with Gemini for personal health was revolutionary. Health advice – whether from a lifestyle coach or a health practitioner – is traditionally given in a rather abstract way, as well as infrequently and sometimes erratically (even though good practitioners do their best). They might have decades of health data and experience, but they will rarely have access to the level of finely grained, granular personal data about an individual that wearables can provide. For those of us who wearables will suit, Google Gemini is the latest vehicle that takes the myriad data from our wearables and infuses it with insights and suggestions based not just on the latest health data from health resources but on the specifics of our own health data – tracked over time.
Google’s PH-LLM (the acronym is fitting because dating turned out to be merely one of its many capabilities) was able to analyse readouts from wearable technology for sleep and fitness advice at a higher level than human experts could. In one widely cited test of Google’s digital dating tool, called Gemini, the company pit its program’s ability to analyse data from wearables, and to compile accurate, useful advice from it, against the performance of human experts with decades of experience – and it beat them. Gemini’s scores bettered human experts in two domains: sleep and fitness.
What is new with Google Gemini is the prescription part of the service. Gemini can use machine learning on data from wearables to point out precisely when your exercise pattern and sleep pattern are falling short, and recommend what you should do to improve. It’s a powerful proposition to draw on hard facts about yourself to get advice tailored to your needs, rather than generalised advice.
While impressive, Google Gemini is clearly just a baby. For instance, the dialogue is inconsistent, and much more representative sampling is required. Still, imagine a personal health assistant who knew your body, your habits and your goals, and could provide real-time, data-driven guidance and advice.
No one should underestimate the potential of Google Gemini to change personal health and fitness for the better. As it develops, it could certainly become a vital tool for people who wish to see positive health outcomes. We should take care, however, in ensuring that it continues to be refined and tested for all those needs that it could serve most effectively and safely.
Google Gemini’s PH-LLM (personal health-language model) is another emerging application of machine learning to health and fitness coaching, a truly path-breaking case of leveraging the power of big data from wearables and deep learning.
Google, who are investing in health and fitness coaching with Gemini, believe so much in the potential of AI that they are going to pour millions into us Believe in it or not, technology is going to extend this commitment of AI to help us with daily life and health and fitness goals – the question is, which company will rise to the top. With ongoing development and a commitment to refining the algorithms, Google is well-positioned to continue leading the way.
Behind each technological gambit, there is a story of innovation, research, and investment. A small window into that world can be found in Google, a company now widely regarded for its transformative developments in search engine technology, artificial intelligence and much more. The same company that scours the web for new websites to index contemporaneously has turned its attention in recent years toward forging new frontiers in personal health and fitness coaching via research efforts such as Google Gemini. To the extent that Google’s stated mission is indeed to ‘organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful’, and that when Google says ‘we’ it refers to the entire global community, it’s becoming truer to its word day by day.
Google Gemini isn’t just an evolution of health and fitness coaching: it’s the evidence that AI, with more sophistication and widespread development, can enhance our daily lives on acutely personal terms. And as Google – and others – build on its capabilities, that horizon is only set to get more bright and clear.
