As we orbit around the latest wonders of ever-evolving smartphone technology, a name prized for its aesthetic of innovation and coolness keeps making a comeback: the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Right now, with a Galaxy Z Flip 6 going into space, rumours about its upcoming dusting off are nothing short of stellar. As we’re getting ready for the self-proclaimed ‘nation of infinite possibility’ to reinvent the foldable Universe, it’s time for us to make some bets – or wishes? – on the Galaxy Z Flip 6, perhaps the greatest, most speculative and obscure gadget of the year to come.
We have stardust still settling from its predecessor when launching the Galaxy Z Flip 6 into the foldable universe. This should happen no later than July 2024 – straight into the heart of a Galaxy Unpacked event, timed (they say) to coincide with the opening ceremonies of the 2024 Summer Olympics. The Z Flip 6 could be a star performer in both senses of the word.
Leaked schematics of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 suggest a slightly beefier device that is a better version of the original, clinging to the precious metal of the clamshell design while accentuating subtle but important refinements. Pictures of the purported Galaxy Z Flip 3 surfaced online on 6 February, featuring leaks of what’s expected to be a slightly beefier device from Samsung that, if the photos are any indication, carries a possibly larger battery and a wider 3.9-inch external screen for a more immersive mini-tablet experience without ever having to unfold the device.
A technological pulsar that should now be beating to a new rhythm, courtesy of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset that’ll be three times faster, more power efficient and made for the fifth-gen Galaxy. When duet with two batteries, doubling the space needed from one cell in the Galaxy Z Flip 4, a total capacity nearing 4,000mAh is suggested. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 could come equipped with a 50MP main camera upgrade too. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 could be the next celestial wonder.
Beyond that this galaxy of enhancements, this new universe of consumer/investor gravity, isn’t so easy to pin down. We know the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will land on Earth somewhere in the financial universe. Historical precedent confirms Earth’s orbit will be roughly $999. But whether Samsung can hold its ground or get swung into a new orbit by the galaxy of enhancements is another matter.
It could be well worth the wait for currently Z Flip 3 (or 4) traversers of the smartphone galaxy; the Galaxy Z Flip 6 looks set to deliver a generational leap in technology and user experience. But for spacefarers inclined to stay right where they are in tech terms, or even for those among you tempted by the world of discovery beyond Samsung’s foldables, the answer might not be quite so obvious.
Peering into the crystal ball ahead, our Galaxy Z Flip 6 wishlist is clearly guided by heavenly bodies such as those of innovation and user experience. We want a device that not only exploits the potential of the cover screen, but that also soars creatively and technically by way of its camera, battery life and charging speed, while staking out new territory such as that of dust protection, would see the Galaxy Z Flip 6 live up to its name as a true space explorer.
And at the centre of our desire to own a Galaxy Z Flip 6 is an even more expansive curiosity about the growing cosmos of foldables. Every iteration of the South Korean giant’s Z Flip and Z Fold series embodies an undiluted faith in innovation, creativity, and form towards which we remain inexorably drawn.
For the time being, we’ll have to wait for the next transmission from the Samsung galaxy. But until then, this much seems certain: the Galaxy Z Flip 6 was no phone. It was the future, a signal of human ingenuity, the leading edge of a technological frontier, one that promises to unfold with ever more gorgeous elegance and surprise.
