As the gaming world continues to hunger for new and innovative experiences, UBISOFT’s announcement of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is now making the rounds around the world. The story takes place during feudal Japan, an open-world action-adventure-stealth game set in Nara and Kyoto during the Sengoku period (1467-1615), where two destinies will collide in a way that has never been seen before. Naoe Fujibayashi is a ninja assassin, the other is a historical legend, Yasuke, the first African samurai. Players will unite and fight as two unlikely heroes on their way to unravel the mysteries of the Shogunate and the unknown powers that may control it. Available on PlayStation 5 and many other platforms.
Ubisoft’s E3 forward event, which took place in June 2024, not only announced highly anticipated games, but wowed gamers with a live gameplay walkthrough of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which demonstrated PS5’s graphical prowess: the photorealistic rendering of feudal landscapes and beautiful character models. In the staged gameplay, the protagonists Naoe and Yasuke used their skills to takedown enemies and complete optional side quests.
‘We’re going to make sure seasons have an impact on the game,’ explains Charles Benoit, game director of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, ‘so instead of always stealth assassinating people, you’ll have to use different strategies depending on how you feel and what time of year it is.’ Add in the beefed-up PS5 capabilities and every mission will feel fresh and unique, but also will ask for new approaches as its challenges evolve through dynamic time of day and weather effects.
Frustrated long-time players who asked for a more dramatic departure from the ‘point-A to point-B’ quest structure of previous entries just might feel vindicated by Assassin’s Creed Shadows, whose tone-setting missions are a completely different beast to those of the previous entries. ‘New consoles will find a new way of playing,’ read the main takeaway, an idea brought to life by this advert. It would seem the PS5 is setting a new benchmark for the Assassin’s Creed series.
The actual development helm of Assassin’s Cassandra Shadows is with Ubisoft Quebec, the studio behind some of the best and most engaging story arcs and memorable characters in the Assassin’s Creed game universe. They have experience building dual protagonist stories that players fall in love with, through their work on games such as Assassin’s Creed Syndicate with Jacob and Evie Frye, and, most recently on Odyssey with Kassandra and Alexios. Players can expect the story of Naoe and Yasuke to be as emotionally rich as it is visually flashy when it finally launches for the PS5.
On 15 November 2024, game fans excitedly lined up outside electronics stores to get their hands on their chosen edition of Assassin’s Creed Shadows – the most anticipated game of the previous year. With options including the core Standard Edition, the sensory overload that is the Gold Edition including Season Pass bonuses, the lavishly packed Ultimate Edition or the collector’s dream that is the Collector’s Edition, there is a version of Assassin’s Creed Shadows for every PS5 gamer.
Every morsel of lore and bits of gameplay shared made Assassin’s Creed Shadows the most anticipated PS5 title of 2024. A stunningly rendered, profoundly immersive, story-driven action-RPG that will live long in the minds and memories of videogamers.
Thanks to the PlayStation 5’s powerful hardware, you can experience Assassin’s Creed Shadows with its incredible visual fidelity, fast load times and frames-per-second fluidity. You will adventure in the vast world of feudal Japan with a level of detail never before seen, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the console’s tremendous capabilities.
While its primary function is still that of a game, Ubisoft’s use of PS5 features shows an intention to use the full potential of next-generation technology to enrich storytelling and gameplay. If you’re playing Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you’re not just playing a game – you’re experiencing something and, thanks to the PS5, you’re doing it in a world that’s richer and more detailed than it’s ever been before.
In short, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the exemplar that reveals the promise of merging the lure of history, the possibilities of new gameplay dynamics, and the power of the new technologies for gaming with all the beauty that the PS5 can offer. And all we have to do is put our hands on the PS5 controller on 15 November 2024.
