Much like in the natural world, the gaming world is relentless, moving forward in leaps and bounds into new frontiers, technologies, and experiences. Among the most recent trends to emerge and grab the attention of the gaming world everywhere is gaming handhelds that power full-scale PC games. It’s as if gamers have been released from the shackles of gaming desktops, free to take their high-quality gaming experiences with them on the go. A new entrant to the portable gaming arena is the Zotac Zone Gaming Handheld. What can it offer that other gaming handhelds can’t? Let’s take a closer look to see.
The Zotac Zone Gaming Handheld, which packs a high-powered AMD R7 8840U CPU with the upper mid-range AMD Radeon 780M GPU, is ideal for current and future PC gaming needs and promises to provide a high-quality exciting gaming experience with all sorts of PC titles. The handheld console comes with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD, which is sufficient for current gaming needs and has additional storage for additional games that gamers will buy in the future on Steam.
One of its most unique features is the 7-inch AMOLED touchscreen. It’s a huge leap in quality for a handheld screen, with a 120Hz refresh rate, which is interesting since the PlayStation Vita has a 5-inch LCD with a slower 60Hz refresh rate. Looking at the competition, the Qualcomm Snapdragon G3x Handheld was recently announced, with a screen boasting just over 100Hz, and a slightly larger 6.65-inch display. It’s great to see quality growing in the handheld space. This makes the Zotac Zone great for gaming outside, or to watch a movie.
Combining the importance of comfort and control, the Zotac Zone comes with 2-stage trigger switches and Hall Effect joysticks, giving players the option to develop a customised control scheme fit for their actions. Providing heightened gameplay precision, the Zotac Zone also includes a kickstand that allows for hands-free viewing. It’s not just a gaming machine, it’s also an entertainment centre in your living room.
Plus, the Zotac Zone’s USB-C ports for connectivity and charging, a microSD card reader to expand storage and a Kensington lock slot to physically secure the machine all show that the device can adapt to any specific gamer’s unique needs.
It’s not a unique proposition, as competition for the gaming handheld market continues to heat up, but the high refresh rate AMOLED screen, the customisable controls, and the use of Hall Effect thumbsticks are each significant features designed to appeal to gamers who want a device that plays games well, but also that improves the gaming experience through thoughtful and meticulous design and technology.
All right, so the Zotac Zone Gaming Handheld is pretty exciting as concepts go. However, while this device was shown off at Computex 2024, that’s by no means a final form – there’s a lot of time for tweaking, tuning and just generally making it better before it actually lands. Fortunately for those looking to get their hands on this intriguing device, the gaming community at large will be getting more details regarding when it might be available, and how much it might cost, in the months to come. If Zotac can get through development of this accessory without letting it come off its rails, this could very well be the device we all thought was really happening back in 2022.
And, as I talked about the potential and features of the Zotac Zone in this feature, they kept cropping up. It’s the R7 – and not just any R7, of course. The specific R7 in question is AMD’s Ryzen 7 8840U CPU. This is a high-performance, low-power processor that AMD promises will make the Zotac Zone and other similarly compact devices perform like a premium laptop. The R7 is the marquee element from AMD’s 8000-series line, the successor to the 7000-series. It plays to AMD’s desire to produce powerful processors that won’t scorch your PC or gobble too much battery life. It’s one of the CPU options available that makes PC gaming on the Zotac Zone – and by extension, other similar gaming handhelds – feasible. Together, Zotac and AMD are looking to build a PC gaming handheld to be reckoned with.
The Zotac Zone Gaming Handheld is set to take portable PC gaming to an exciting new level. Fueled by an R7 CPU, AMOLED screen and loaded with gamer-centric features, this is one device that could give us the ability to take our PC gaming adventures with us on the road. As we await more details on the final specifications, pricing and marketing plans, one thing is for certain: the future of gaming is bright – and it’s held comfortably in your hand.
