It’s impossible to ignore the fact that almost every smartphone on the shelf is a facsimile of one another, save for maybe a handful: same processor, same camera, same design. It’s the same monotonous story over and over, with only minor modifications coming every year or so. The spectacular edgeless design of the Motorola Edge 50 Pro doesn’t just win because of its looks, but because it places aesthetics first above all else. It’s a testament of what’s possible when a company has the resources to push the envelope, at a premium $999. Motorola needs to maintain its pace in the mid-tier and premium segment as it reasserts itself in the mobile-phone market. The Motorola Edge 50 Pro is the energy that’s driving Motorola. Let’s take a look.
First, there is its design. The Motorola Edge 50 Pro’s soft-touch rear panel offers a tactile texture that is unusual in smartphones these days. It is set off by a camera array that sits flush with the back and quite literally appears to sprout from the device. Our review unit was also a pleasure to the senses colourwise. The Luxe Lavender model with matching aluminium edges was a joy to hold, though it did scuff and dirtied up in the time that I tested it. Its slick form factor is a triumph of the smartphone’s design developement, pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
Power it up and the first thing you see is the massive 6.7 inch pOLED screen with a SuperHD resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. HDR10+ compliant, this screen is a portal to vivid colours and fine details in the palm of your hand, a pocket cinema. Its curved edges make it look good and feel good at the same time, and even though it’s a super device, the ergonomics are not super-sized.
The Motorola Edge 50 Pro is a solid performer with a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 processor (backed up by 12GB of RAM), although it won’t keep up with the latest chipsets, it does come with features such as Ram Boost, where unused storage is allocated as virtual RAM to keep everything as snappy as possible.
Cameraphilist Please the shutter-happy, with a three-lens rear camera setup featuring a 50-megapixel main sensor. Low-light photography isn’t a problem, and you can also expect true-to-life colours. Get your best side on in selfies with the added 50-megapixel shooter on the front.
But Motorola’s value-added features embedded into the Android 14 operating system provide a seamless, intuitive experience: gesture controls to launch the camera or torch; Edge Lights to notify of a message; Adobe Scan to turn it into a digital document scanner. Motorola shows that it really cares about the usefulness of its handsets.
Another standout feature is the 4500mAh battery with extended use times; I easily got a day-and-a-half on a single charge with moderate use. Of course, the 125W charger is where your phone really comes to life – from 0 to 50 per cent in under eight minutes, something never to be missed in the race for power. Sure, it does get warm, but with a fast charge like this, it’s a small price to pay.
The reality is that the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is a phone and a lot more besides, a device that delivers for compelling mobile computer use in design, display, performance, camera, charging and more. Yes, it is an expensive smartphone at $999, but if you are looking for technology that also has style, the Motorola Edge 50 Pro represents a very decent bet.
When we use the word ‘edge’ in reference to the Motorola Edge 50 Pro, we are referring to the most innovative design details and features, such as the curved screen edges of the device that provide a vast and immersive screen experience. Or the Edge Lights feature, which turn the edges into a glowing glowstick or dazzling firework display to notify you of incoming calls, messages and missed alerts. Edge is defining the limits or extremes, it’s a superlative and buzzword in its own right. It’s a nod to the brilliant innovation introduced with touch-sensitive glass and the introduction of the first curved display. This is what the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is all about. It is the ultimate embodiment of the edge, giving users the best of what’s available. A superlative, a new form of excellence, where the device is the epitome; the best of the best. We’re talking about the pinnacle. Or as they say in Silicon Valley, the cutting edge of smart technology, design and user experience.
