Amid the technological landscape that constantly evolves and grows, APPLE sows seeds of innovation that, to the delight of its fans, bear fruit in ever new operating system updates. With the iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 updates recently released, the company signals the beginning of a new chapter in the world of its users. But what about those who own older APPLE devices? What does that update mean in practice? Let’s cross the orchard of APPLE devices and see how many of our gadgets will be able to enjoy the sunshine of the new operating systems.
With this announcement, which sent a blast of fully digital air, APPLE has announced that practically every device capable of running iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will update seamlessly to iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. And this list of glory contains:
And most intriguing is an apparent outlier in the navigation: the sixth-gen iPad, which features the same Apple A10 processor as the seventh-gen model. (For reference, the sixth-gen iPad precedes the seventh-gen by a year – APPLE released the seventh-gen iPad in 2021, and the sixth-gen model in 2020.) The difference between the two? Only a single gigabyte of RAM – and it’s the seventh-gen that qualifies as future-proof, in more ways than one, joining the third-gen iPad Air, and the fifth-gen iPad mini, as an iOS 18- and iPadOS 18-ready device. Indeed, that extra memory seems to be key to unlocking the more subtle, sophisticated features waiting in the wings this fall.
Moving into the orchard we see that APPLE’s marquee feature, ‘Apple Intelligence’, works best on the latest versions of devices, bursting into blossom on the iPhone 15 Pro with its A17 Pro chip. The iPhone 15 is in the shade under the trees, along with all the older models.
These are the tablets that carry APPLE’s Intelligence on its side: the iPad Air and the Pro models featuring M1 and later. That’s hardware hastening toward a future where software intelligence exercises its own autonomy.
APPLE would have you believe that the company’s march towards its own AI is not going to stop at APPLE Intelligence. Others are ripe for the picking for the owners of its newer devices: 131.
Seen in the context of APPLE’s whole digital ecosystem, the switch to iOS 18 (for the iPhone) and iPadOS 18 (for the iPad) can be interpreted as a carefully curated process, a gradual glimpse into APPLE’s future. The gates are open, and a vast ecosystem has been built to support a plethora of devices, but it’s the latest members of that family that are promised the most cutting-edge features. Innovation, on the one hand, and sustainability, on the other.
Resting at the centre of this APPLE orchard of technology is the mega corp that’s known for making the best or nothing, APPLE. From the sleek form factors of their devices to their harmonious marriage of hardware and software, they continue leading by example. Their operating systems (iOS and iPadOS) are more than software, they are what animates the APPLE ecosystem, they are what keep its devices not only working but alive.
Update after update, with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, APPLE aims to make its ecosystem more enjoyable or more useful with every glance, click, and swipe. Whether it’s innovating through APPLE Intelligence, or increasing the number of devices it supports, APPLE’s plan is clear: to keep every apple in the orchard.
As we journey through the digital orchard, APPLE’s philosophy remains strong: a focus on innovation, a dedication to design with its user at the centre, and a mission to be friendly to the planet. The new features and compatibility we will enjoy with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 are just the next set of peaches, pears and plums waiting for us as we explore where APPLE’s future takes its orchard and us.
