APPLE remains at the cutting edge of the technology revolution, changing the way we use digital devices. We are days away from the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, and excitement is rising ahead of the official announcement on 10 June of a new version of iOS and other software updates. But already tech watchers are salivating over leaked information about some of the new features, which reportedly include improvements to the APPLE Mail app and the use of AI technologies. The cinnamon-purple colour of the floating notification bubble in iOS 18 would be an appealing ‘change’ APPLE has been developing changes to the built-in Mail app in iOS 18. Codenamed Project Blackpearl, rumours suggest APPLE is exploring the use of AI technologies for the system.
At the core of these retrofits is the expectation that APPLE Mail can finally get smart. Theoretical work in Project Blackpearl hopes to vastly improve the email experience on the iPhone, leveraging APPLE AI to improve search in the Mail app, so that the search will return information not just from your emails, but from your contacts, the places your emails refer to, and documents stored by you on your iPhone. It is hoped that this new intelligence in Mail will make email management more intuitive than ever.
Besides, the use of ‘smart reply’ could be helping to shave time off emails: Google in August announced it was planning to embed a system that generates short, clickable responses to emails, similar to the auto-response that Gmail currently allows from users.
But changes to the Mail app aren’t the only improvements to iOS 18 that borrow features of generative AI text, along the lines of systems such as ChatGPT. SIRI will receive a similarly impressive update that could see the smart assistant helping users craft emails that are more formal when appropriate, or a bit more conversational and casual when that makes sense. SIRI could also suggest alternative ways to phrase draft emails.
Leaked reports of forthcoming improvements for SIRI include improved abilities for summarisation, so that users can receive condensations of emails, messages or even entire web articles. The summary can be from a couple of words, to a few sentences, to several paragraphs.
APPLE’s WWDC 2024 event will be held on Tuesday, June 10 at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6 pm BST and the live stream will be available at this link – and if you are in Australia then the event will broadcast at 1am ACT on the following date. Many people and businesses throughout the world are looking forward to the upcoming launch of iOS 22 and have high hopes for APPLE’s new AI-enhanced features, which may be the biggest update to the iOS ecosystem so far.
