Google’s latest iteration of the PIXEL line-up is like the old-timey pirate chest full of treasure troves of innovation, the stuff that sci-fi dreams are made of, but which is now reality by being built right into the ‘smart’ devices you use every day. Just one of the features included in the newest Find My Device app heralds a vast improvement over previous versions in the PIXEL 8 and PIXEL Pro lines of devices: you will never again lose your device, even if it’s off or out of range of Bluetooth or any other (more modern) wireless communication services. How? Well, let’s see what Google thinks of this feature on its new PIXEL 6 and PIXEL 6 Pro devices. This particular feature can – and probably will – bring peace of mind to millions of users that were hitherto tossed and turned at night because their device was ‘off’ (or out of range) and they couldn’t find it.
Drilling down, Google enables Gemini Nano on the PIXEL 8 and 8a; although the PIXEL 8 Pro had first dibs, by making it available on the new, mid-range 8a, the company extends advanced developer capabilities to more creators, drawing them into the ever-evolving learning ecosystem of the machine.
Ever had one of those malevolent unknown numbers haunt you? If so, you are going to love PIXEL’s latest feature drop, which adds the ability to look up reverse phone numbers from the call log, on the fly. No need to do any internet searching. No need for a third party. Want to know what number has been bothering the hell out of you lately? Just tap on it. You make the call – literally.
But now, for the studious or the diligent notetaker, the upgraded recorder app comes with a secret weapon, or rather, a summary. Record conversations, lectures or meetings to get a simple overview, complete with names of speakers, courtesy of your PIXEL. This leap in smarter note-taking should be a winner.
Small screens, the party’s over. With Display Port support, your PIXEL isn’t just a phone, but a pass to the show. Plug it into a larger display and you’re in the picture, big time.
Straight out of a sci-fi short story, your PIXEL Watch is getting better at detecting when you’ve wrecked in a car or fallen off a bike. When the shit goes down — and you’re in a collision or have taken a massive spill on your two-wheeler — your PIXEL Watch is there to call for help. You’re never really alone.
From now on, those of us with a PIXEL Watch won’t have to rummage through our pockets fumbling for a wallet: we can pay with PayPal Wallet by glancing at our wrist. Convenience is here to stay, and it’s looking secure.
Crucially, Google’s walled garden brings the same seamless experience to multiple devices. Your Google PIXEL watch becomes a remote. Tap and swipe, and your Google fan speeds are raised or lowered to your liking; your Google humidifier heats up (presumably, it will also be controlled by your Google voice assistant, because that’s what Google wants to see); and your Google lights go on or off, brightening or dimming to your command. It’s Google’s fantasy come true.
The PIXEL Tablet isn’t left out of this feature parade either. Its newest trick: doubling as an automated doorkeeper. Docked, it displays pictures of people at your doorstep, providing security and convenience in the most Google way possible.
The final crown jewel across the range: HDR+ photos, capturing the split-second moment you actually want, without any guess for work. At the click of a button, your PIXEL will make and keep memories in stunning detail.
One PIXEL is a concept that extends beyond a unit of digital imagery in a world defined by pixels. It is an empowering narrative of Google’s iterative innovation. Pixels are the canvas of Google’s world of tomorrow – where technology reshapes the world for the better. It enables, it simplifies, it connects. It is – and this is where bald corporate honesty is a thing of beauty – all the platforms for the life you lead.
At each feature drop, PIXEL is nudging the future ever closer, embedding AI, machine learning and intuitive design into the everyday – finding the phone, the watch and the tablet that see, watch and wait at the doorstep.
With every subsequent update, then, Google’s ability to convince PIXEL users that they’re in capable hands – trust in their continuing commitment to innovation – has been improved. With every update, each Google PIXEL device is more than just a device: it’s an assistant.
