Hades 2, the roguelike from the creative minds at Supergiant Games, has recently gotten an early access update that puts the original in a new and compelling light. While H2.0 has some extremely interesting features clicking away at the engine of play, at its heart lies a significant alteration to the relationship between time and distance, and it’s this that makes me want to talk about operating by the DASH. DASH is this game’s method for our protagonist to move quickly, and using it effectively is one of the key lessons you’ll need to master to succeed. Before I can get into that monkey wrench (one of my favourite tools!), though, I need to establish some background. That’s where things get really interesting. One of the oldest tropes in all videogames is the scoreboard, the screen at the end of every stage where the program announces your accomplishment, usually showing how well you measured up against other players, a fair chunk of whose achievements are stored on a server or online leaderboard.
But since then, Supergiant has paid attention to its audience – and a recent patch adds a whole pile of stuff to Hades 2. It’s not just fluffy crap, though: it takes care of various things that were bugging a great many players about Hades 2. From gameplay and pacing tweaks to bug fixes, a brand new level brings a smoother, richer and more engaging jaunt down to the underworld in your favourite ‘dad shoes’, as you leap and dodge your way through the Olympian monsters. Let’s take a look.
But one of the biggest changes players will feel as soon as they hop into a game post-patch is the reworked functionality of the DASH. Being able to DASH out of attack recovery animations increases the fluidity of combat, keeps you on your toes in a fight, and keeps you glued to the action. The speed and feel of both sprinting and dashing are higher.
And in Hades 2, resource gathering is one of the fundamental pillars of advancement. That new patch optimises resource-gathering, making it less cumbersome to dash towards goals, a refined resource collection to gather more resources. Now boosting your abilities – and discovering new tools – is easier.
It’s becoming easier to stay alive: doing things like dashing across voids and through Hades 2’s thoughtfully designed higher-risk, higher-reward levels is easier and – once you’ve eliminated the worry of suddenly discovering your death was actually avoidable – more fun. Redesigned user interface and menus layouts make information and options more accessible.
Just as it’s common in most action games, this isn’t literally true of Hades 2’s DASH: it’s not something you do to get from one place to another, but a means of hovering, of controlling your position in space within the bounds of the game’s challenges, and precisely in order to perform those activities swiftly through obstacles and directly towards objectives. Moving fast in Hades 2 isn’t necessarily about speed, but skill: it’s the kind of movement that puts space itself to work, managing its control in time. This sense of skill is echoed in the other, aesthetically oriented sense of DASH.
Interestingly, the DASH is also a concept that translates into the real world, where it stands for energy, initiative, the will to persevere, to take advantage of opportunities, and to prevail through agility, speed, adaptability and inner fire. To DASH in a game like Hades 2 is to play the game with a proactive, dynamic mindset that leads you to push through challenges swiftly and effectively.
Since Hades 2 is also planned to be in early access until the end of 2024, the journey through the underworld can only get deeper with their commitment to continue polishing their work.
Dash exists outside gaming as an expression of movement, with speed and tricks embedded in its very path, making it not simply a navigational tool for the player but a measure of individual progress, agility and strategy. Layers of Hades 2 are just that, layers of DASH.

To sum up, not only does the latest patch for Hades 2 improve the game, but the role played by DASH in creating playful experiences also highlights what makes the game so great. We don’t have to worry about the future yet, because Hades the game promises eternal loops of development for us to explore, in addition to the infinite loops our characters must traverse in the underworld to come back even stronger. However, with the inspiration and influx of playful practice that transpires around dash in emerging games, genres and real-world applications, there is much to look forward to.
