On the sea of computing, where the tides of innovation still crash onto the beaches of consumer expectations, laptops are islands of work, recreation and invention. The Framework 13 is one of the most ingenious and repairable laptops I’ve had the pleasure of spending time with, much to the envy of PC enthusiasts and adulation of tech press. The Framework is also evidence that the laptop’s power and potential are still going strong. Here’s a trip through the latest Framework 13, its peaks and valleys and the place it inhabits in the 2023 world of personal technology.
At the heart of the latest Framework 13 laptop is a little miracle named Intel Core Ultra 7 155H, the sort of chip that was meant to carry the darling of modern design into new realms of speed and power. Yet this chip has become a botched pirouette in an otherwise marvellous ballet, supplanted not just by AMD silicon but also by its own Intel predecessors, fading the magic of the delightful Framework design.
If you ignore that Intel hiccup, and the fact that the Framework 13 has a higher resolution screen with a higher refresh rate, an improved cooling system, pretty much the same weight, and again the pioneering, infinitely configurable body shape that launched the standard, adored design, then yes, you already have a laptop that you love. It isn’t really a tool at all; and if the tinkerer, the creator who is aware of the world behind, is what you’re looking for, then you will know it when you meet it, and you’ll fall in love.
Peel back the packaging on the DIY box of the Framework 13 and it feels like a pirate’s chest, brimming with treasures for the tech-savvy hobbyist. Each piece neatly packed and ready for assembly, the chance to build your computer yourself makes the Framework your device, your creation.
Its cooling scheme, perhaps the unsung hero of the new Framework 13 Laptop, is another demonstration of how thin-and-light can now work. It keeps its cool without a shrill whine, or even a single complicated moving part.
With quieter operation and crisper displays the Framework 13 Laptop Intel Core Ultra Series 1 is overtaken by the AMD Ryzen series in raw power and reliability. How new is better?
Yet while it’s not all lost when it comes to innovation, the Intel-hearted Framework 13 has only slightly improved battery life and fan noise. It’s a very mixed bag of gains and losses – a device that promises evolution but is itself ensnared by the evolutions it represents.
New iterations of the Framework 13 Laptop please and puzzle aficionados, with a higher resolution screen and higher refresh rates for DIYers tantalisingly available. This is a chapter that doesn’t close with a satisfying (final) period, and that is just the way custom enthusiasts would have it.
Laptops such as the Framework 13 are reflections of the human crave for technological utopias. They are not mere instruments or devices, but sheltering partners on the information-age journey, trophies of its triumphs as well as tragedies, chronicles of its succession of miracles and blunders, and ultimately expressions of its desperate longing to embrace perfection with the power of engineering.
