Unlock the World of Premier Series with Amazon Prime Video
Amazon Prime Video has become a haven for good drama amid the maelstrom of streaming in which Netflix sometimes offers so much it actually dissipates into nothingness. The movies coming out of this studio are also impressive. But with all those boxsets how do you home in on the best of the best? Well, we’ve done the work for you.
Imagine superheroes as they actually might be: humans’ worst features writ large – that’s the world in which ‘The Boys’ embeds us. As Amazon’s series brings its latest season to a frenzied conclusion, putting the eponymous team through hell and back again, the gorier-than-ever TV lens through which it examines unfettered power is those villains in spandex.
With Outer Range, Amazon sent us down a time-traveling rabbit hole that combines a western drama about an embattled ranching family with sci-fi mysteries and zero-G physics. As the Abbotts face a seemingly time-travelling pit on their land, the genre mix is a skillful teetering act between action, horror, western drama, sci-fi and a thousand other genres, unfolding week by week and season by season.
It’s the book’s ability to capture, rather than simply repurpose, what it draws from – a post-apocalyptic trek in the bright light of dark humour and cracked Americana – that makes Fallout into a real page turner.
Amazon’s take on The Three-Body Problem tells a galaxy-spanning mystery, weaving through time to unravel the first extraterrestrial contact in human history. As is fitting for such a sprawling tale, viewers can expect a 30-episode run.
The Amazon reboot of Mr and Mrs Smith freshens up the premise with fresh action and empathy for the people involved in the conflicts (Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are sensational).
Amazon’s reboot of the police procedural Hieronymus Bosch owes its title to the LA detective hero, as gritty and politically messy as the environment he peels like an investigative onion. With a nod to the author of the medieval triptych, Amazon’s Bosch has got soul.
With the Jack Reacher thrillers, Amazon delivers a lean, fast-moving adaptation that’s hard to stop watching – proof that Amazon has learnt from its mistakes when it comes to adaptations that sell.
‘Invincible’ rises to the level of the best animated superhero storytelling, as it charts the growth of Mark Grayson in a universe where heroism is often just the start of his troubles. Amazon’s adaptation of the long-running comic book series is a masterclass in mature storytelling and dynamic animation.
Scrolling down the Amazon Prime Video homepage reveals a cornucopia of storytelling ingenuity. You’ll find the high fantasy stakes of The Wheel of Time and the comedy innovators of I’m a Virgo, as well as the grim realities of The Rig, the animated goings-on of The Legend of Vox Machina and a lot more.
One thing these shows have in common is that they are not remotely representative of the kind of content Amazon Prime Video offers – at least, not if you wander through the site’s prodigious library. There, you’ll find a multitude of series flying below the radar that offer surprising, often genre-defying pleasures, and reflect a welcome commitment to providing a truly diverse range of high-quality entertainment.
Getting lost on Amazon Prime Video can be a daunting and confusing experience. But it is also a portal to new worlds and the creator of content that lives as big and as varied as your mind can imagine. Yes, it has its hidden corners and nebulous dark holes. But those corners and dark holes might just be exactly where you want to go. From the dusty sword-and-sorcery gutters of superhero life to the far reaches of galactic space, you are invited to go there and traverse worlds that are at once stunningly new and comfortingly old. And all from the coziness of your living room.
They are certainly not the only streamer around – but Amazon Prime Video stands out for some excellence in curation, especially via adaptations that bring beloved stories to life for new audiences, and via original series that take you into new worlds, often in old genres. So get settled in with your remote and prepare to step into a different world. Amazon Prime Video has a show for you.
