In the world of current video gaming, we’re often greeted by a title that promises not just a game, but rather an experience. Combat mechanics, careful placement of the villagers to navigate death, protecting Yoshiro from enemy attacks – it all comes in rhythm, a new genre, deeply immersive and beautifully orchestrated for Xbox One.
That’s because, at the most elemental level, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is a dance. A real, literal dance, mind you, as opposed to just a metaphorical one. Players fight using what’s called a ‘sword dance’, in which a simple but potent combination of buttons allows the player to execute beautifully fluid combos while fending off the encroaching pall of darkness. The Xbox One gamepad is a kind of prosthetic that modulates the player’s strategic mind and quick reflexes, and every button press is another step in the multi-limbed dance of combat.
The game’s beauty is not skin-deep. It is not merely something that plays divinely, but something that looks divine. The Maiden Yoshiro, the crucial catalyst that will restore the mountain to grace, is a singular element of ethereal strength, clothed in rich, textured finery that moves with purpose and precision and poise. This place, even in its defiled state, is a character in its own right, an alive, horrifying and enchanting world to discover detailed and rendered with stunning clarity on Xbox One.
For a more challenging experience, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess features sections with more difficult enemies. Gakinyudo, a monstrous foe spawned from tainted magic and the dark arts, embodies what is unique and terrifying about the game’s enemies. Defeating these creatures involves using one’s brain, as well as wielding the Xbox One’s controls and comprehending the combat system while playing.
