In this vast, sprawling universe of mobile games, it’s not often that we see a small green shoot of a game that could actually hold us in place for months, exercising our management skills and imagination to the limit – or that actually has a chance to succeed. That marvellous green shoot landed on the mobile gaming industry the other day, almost like spring on our computer screens. Bethesda Softworks announced a new mobile venture from Bethesda Game Studios, making something similar to Fallout Shelter, the successful post-apocalyptic mobile game about building a fallout shelter to survive the end of the world as we know it. The twist to the formula is that the new game, The Elder Scrolls: Castles, will expand on the Fallout Shelter formula, only it won’t have anything to do with The Fallout universe. It will be an Elder Scrolls universe game, and have everything to do with kingdom-building.
Fundamentally The Elder Scrolls: Castles is a strategic simulation game, where you can build up, rule and manage kingdoms. This is not just another city builder: it’s a journey of exploration and storytelling in a universe loved by millions, together with a vast array of quests, strange subjects and, of course, the duty of kingdom management.
While oversaturated mobile game markets make it difficult to seem fresh, by combining detailed world-building with casual, free-to-play convenience, Elder Scrolls’ Castles should remain in players’ minds when browsing the App Store or Google Play. The game will launch on 10 September 2024 for Android and iOS.
What this gaming engine offers – in The Elder Scrolls: Castles, and potentially in other games later on – is more direct, on-the-fly control over the kingdom-building process: you can build a castle, yes. And you can command your subjects to do your bidding.. But you can also build it in your own image. You can design the layout, the interior, the entire castle as informed by your strategic acumen and artistic sensibility.
But you’re not truly a king until you’ve ventured outside your kingdom. In Castles, the lead-up to your destiny ritually takes the form of questing: you assemble your most powerful retainers, equip them with weapons and armour, and set out to fight in dungeons, exploring your land in search of treasure and glory. It’s here especially that the game’s quiet brilliance emerges. Castles is at its best when it combines casual play with nuanced strategy.
Like its predecessor, it is free-to-play (or, rather, for-play) though – cautious of the pitfalls of in-game purchases – it wants to stay on the right side of what the managing director calls the ‘corruption line’. Whether it can pull this off – whether its success will depend on being halfway to hell – will dictate whether it has the staying power that helped build its ancestor’s immense charm.
The runup to the game’s 10 September release date is unbearably intense, due in large part to exclusive pre-registration bonuses that Bethesda has been offering every 100,000 registrants. The bonuses – which include in-game money and decorations – serve as sweeteners for people who might otherwise hesitate to pre-register for a game. And there might be good reason to hesitate: mobile games are notorious for being sunk costs, where you’ve paid for the privilege of grinding to unlock content that you’ve already paid for. Bethesda is promising that Fallout Shelter will be different.
