Dragon Age Inquisition is a monument to the RPG genre, an enormous, fleshed-out world bursting with lore and, like everything in a game, waiting to be carved by the players. BioWare released it in 2014 and it has been a crowning achievement in both storytelling and gameplay since. It is a work of art, and Epic Games just announced that they want to cement its legacy in gaming history: Dragon Age Inquisition will be free.
But that goes for many of the Epic Games Store’s free games dumps, which have drawn a whole swath of players away from triple-A franchises and McDonald’s-voucher make-‘em-ups, exposing them to genres and stories they might never have seen otherwise, and strengthening the collective legacy of games and gamers. Making Dragon Age Inquisition available for nothing is Epic furthering that evolving legacy.
It’s the same, but more so, because the same day as the giveaway was announced, Epic also announced an Mega Sale, in which certain curated deals it touts as offering ‘excitement for all tastes’ will be unveiled. Do you want to experience a new, distinctive and compelling world together with AAA heavyweights like Borderlands 3 or call me down on Kiln of the Firstborn in Destiny 2, but you don’t want to spend money on a new game? Easy: here, you can! Do you want to play indie darlings such as Night in the Woods or Return of the Obra Dinn while slightly indulging your debasement complex? Easy: here, you can! Do you want to explore a post-apocalyptic landscape where machines take the place of animals, fulfilling both your primitive need and your craving for lukewarm IP reboots? Easy: here, you can! Do you want to visit the world of God of War, with its Odin-Curse and hot big ‘man’ in chainmail and mask who is the Chosen One because he has a tragic destiny and is Very Muscular? Easy: here, you can!
The biggest sales are top games, where carving out a successful purchase isn’t just about saving money but making lasting investments in captivating additions to your library. The multiplayer reimagining of Dead Space lets you return to the horror classic and reinvent yourself in its foreboding atmosphere, while the Legendary Edition of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown lets you embark on the classic adventures of a master hero who blossoms in the limelight. Each game on sale offers a chance at creating your own personal saga of virtue, valour, and narrative discovery.
Peel back the skin on this sale a little further, and you’ll discover action-adventure classics such as Grand Theft Auto V and Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection. A psychoanalysis of the sale could argue that these titles have nothing in common – one offers a gritty urban street-level perspective of Los Santos, where sex, drugs and littered bike wheels feel authentic, while the other presents locale after locale where Nathan Drake and his various avatars travel, not always gracefully. A common thread, however, hints at the enduring appeal of action-adventure titles: they urge the player to leap into a world and let the legacy you create weave into the fabric of the action.
While his pick of the week focuses on the expected commercial juggernauts, elsewhere on the service, Epic’s list of games for sale stretches far beyond the bright lights and big releases to encompass indie gems and pipe-dreams that lack the hulking slogans and armchair touting required to dominate a convention stream. Skull and Bones – piracy sim – and Witchfire – dungeon-crawler – aren’t just home to limitless pleasure to be expressed and enjoyed, but also to worlds brimming with story that a player can carve through to create their very own legacies. And there are legions of players who, by way of Epic’s sale, can add to their personal digital tapestries based on what is on offer to them.
With the sale set to go on until 13 June, there’s more than enough opportunity to browse and consider what legacies to invest in. It’s a call to make a collection that reflects your path through the legacies that have carved out this timeline for gaming, and the legacies that will help determine gaming’s course long after we’ve stopped looking. Epic’s move to give away and discount hundreds of games is a loving tribute to gaming’s legacy, and a reminder of our legacies in gaming’s digital world.
Legacy, in this digital holiday spirit, is less about owning games or racking up a high score (though these things have it), and more about the memories made, the friendships forged over games or conversations and stories about games, the things that stick with you on and after you’ve logged off. Legacy is the imprint you leave on the game world and the relationship you bring back into the real world. Epic Games, even through its occasional freebies such as this year’s gift of Dragon Age Inquisition and the ever-annual Mega Sale, is part curator as well as facilitator of the legacies we partake in and cultivate.
