A cinematic trailer for Enotria: The Last Song (2024) took centre-stage at this year’s Summer Game Fest 2024. Not only a Soulslike action RPG in a fantasy world inspired by the history and folklore of Italy, Enotria: The Last Song is a colourful journey through a world of mythos, told through the eyes of its heroes, the Wanderers. Having an accessible playable demo released on 26 July 2024 for PC and PlayStation 5, it’s safe to say that gamers anticipate Enotria’s gameplay. As of today, Enotria will release on 19 September 2024 as a launch title for XBOX SERIES X|S and PlayStation 5, and will be available on PC for Steam and Epic Games Store. This colourful odyssey will have you go through a fantasy world inspired by Italy, and it’s ultimately a tale of the Wanderers who will have to go against the Authors, 12 oppressive beings that have taken control of this world and robbed it of everything good.
At the centre of Enotria: The Last Song, something has gone horribly wrong – the world has been captured by a curse, Canovaccio, a time stop. the culture is enchained by the culture of stasis This curse, set by the Authors of Wrong, has stopped change. It has imprisoned the world, holding it in an eternal present. The players take on the role of the Maskless One, a travelling magician who seeks to break the chains of the curse, using exploration, combat and the power of Adore to change reality and win against the monsters who stand in their way.
In addition to tweaking the usual flowering Soulslike mechanics into an action RPG around a smattering of potent masks that let players don the powers of the enemies they kill, the game promises as many as 30 masks to collect and swap while fighting. Each exclusive Mask as well as weapon and spell adds another layer of strategy and customization on its way to dismantling the cruel dilemmas posed by Enotria’s formidable inhabitants.
The latest trailer premiered at Summer Game Fest – but not only that: it also revealed that the Xbox and PlayStation 5 fans could immerse themselves in the fantastic universe of Enotria: The Last Song by downloading a playable demo available right now, and more details about the game’s deluxe edition were announced, which will give them an even deeper narrative immersion into the world.
And it’s getting closer, ever closer to launch – the more people hear about Enotria: The Last Song and where it fits into the line-up of games available on the XBOX SERIES X, the more they’re looking forward to it for more than just its unique art design and gameplay mechanics, but for the very real prospect that it could forever change how gamers think about Soulslike games.
There are countless Masks, weapons, spells and special skills that players can unlock and customize, which allows them to approach the game in whatever fashion they please: to wade into battle head-on, getting their hands dirty and their armour scuffed; or to strike with precision, throwing magic and arrows behind them, and avoiding anything that so much as stirs. Enotria: The Last Song has something for everybody.
But the real question remains: will players latch on to this wholly Italian folklore-inspired mise-en-scène, intricate art style, and intricate, customizable gameplay to their hearts? Will this game – and this phrase! – have its place alongside the pantheons of XBOX SERIES X Soulslike classics? Only time will tell, but the stage is set for one of the most anticipated releases of the Soulslike canon.
But, as we look forward to the release of Enotria: The Last Song this fall, it is set to become part of a niche in the action RPG Soulslike genre with its unique story, engaging gameplay mechanics, and a deep dive into Italian folklore in its art direction, making it the perfect choice for XBOX SERIES X gamers.
With its complex world to uncover, its unique mechanic that allows the Maskless One to interact with others by taking on their masks, and an extensive variety of equipment to collect for their character, Enotria: The Last Song is shaping up to be an action-packed, prickly challenge of an adventure, and a very challenging one at that. I can’t wait to pick up my copy when it releases in a couple of weeks and try it out on the XBOX SERIES X. I have a suspicion this will be the next big Soulslike to hit the Xbox.
Overall, Enotria: The Last Song is already looking like another essential title for fans of the ‘Soulslike’ genre of combat, and for those who like delving into deep world-building stories with an Italian twist. It’s due to hit Xbox Series X any day now. I’ll definitely be picking it up and will let you know how I got on.
