At the WWDC 2015 event, Apple fanboys were blown away when Tim Cook and his team announced that macOS 15 Sequoia is finally here. This new version is set to change the way people use Macs for good, with exciting new features like screen mirroring, Siri 2.0 powered by Apple Intelligence, and a standalone password manager app. As if that wasn’t good enough, those who attended WWDC got an exclusive opportunity to test the beta of macOS Sequoia in advance of its fall launch. This guide is your ticket to the trial run: downloading and experiencing macOS 15 Sequoia Beta on your Mac.
It was all Apple, all the time, right on cue, WWDC 2024 at Moscone West in San Francisco. The interesting bits came in a whirlwind following the keynote, chief among them iOS 18, the new iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 18. The virtual assistant, AI-ified, of course, and now called ‘Siri’, and of course, macOS 15 Sequoia, what apple-heads call the operating system that runs on the company’s Mac desktops. Sequoia comes with a new crop of improvements and features, and will, they said, ‘take computing to new heights’.
Beta versions of anything are always buggy, so it’s important to note that the company’s stated purpose for Sequoia Beta is for Apple engineers to ‘further tune the software’. Still, if you have the temerity (or are just plain bored) to try out the sluggish thrill-ride that is Sequoia, you too can preview the future of macOS and help shape it by reporting any unforeseen issues.
Before you can finally get your hands on macOS 15 Sequoia, you’ve got to do some prep work. First, you have to make sure your Mac has room to install the new OS. Then you’ll need to sign up for Apple’s developer beta programme, which gives you access to the beta version of the OS. It is your gateway drug to Apple’s latest creations, offered to the public before Apple reveals them to the rest us.
The critical last step, but the one that gets skipped far too often is a full backup of your system. You can choose your poison, whether it’s Time Machine, iCloud, or maybe even an external hard drive, but I can’t stress backing up enough. It saves your data from potential loss when traversing in the untested waters of pre-release software.
From MacOS Developer Beta Access, which you download from Apple’s Developer page. Install and run the app, then sign up to get access to Developer Betas directly from Software Update in your device’s System Settings. A system restart might be necessary to complete the registration.
Navigate to System Settings > General > Software Update, engaging the info button beside "Beta updates." Go to the System Preferences menu, which is marked with a gear icon in the dock.• Select ‘Software Update’.• Click on the ‘More info…’ button.• Select the MacOS Developer beta, confirm you want to do this, and download and install it.
In July, Apple will thrust the olive branch of macOS 15 Sequoia Beta at the Apple-consuming masses. Registering to beta-test will be relatively frictionless. In the spring of 2021, this initial step was omitted from the developer beta process, so by the time of the fall release, the user will be able to partake in the latest and greatest – a radical and regressive three-item redux process.
The adventure we take before its official release – investing some of our time and sometimes our money into a beta version of macOS, 15 Sequoia, here – is not solely an early ride on a software rollercoaster. It’s a concrete representation of how Apple invests us, the users, into their upcoming softwares, giving back to someone who has been with them for ages.
Since Apple is the most innovative company in the world, using beta software, such as the new macOS 15 Sequoia Beta, basically helps put the user at the forefront of progress: not only is the user experiencing the most innovative products, but they’re engaging in an interactive process that will help define what the technological future of the Apple ecosystem looks like.
Apple leads the technological-creative ‘mountain’ It’s incredibly exciting. macOS 15 Sequoia will take things to whole new heights. We look forward to this new version of Apple’s operating system, with all of its new features and improvements. Together, we’ll be journeying up Apple’s mountain-o-software — and, by the time we get to the top, we’re all going to create a major fuss.
