It was the prospect of a brand new Stalker game that brought me here. The legendary series from Ukrainian developer GSC Game World is about to get its third chapter with the ambitious Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl, and playing this pre-release demo at Microsoft’s Summer Game Fest Play Days was one of the most intriguing moments of the event. Let’s get our first S.T.A.L.K.E.R hands-on experience together and see what the radioactive titans of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone have up their sleeves.
After what seemed like forever, the Stalker series has come back, and is now poised to return with a vengeance to the virtual battlefield it left behind. Published by Microsoft and set to be released on 5 September this year, its gameplay promises to deliver exactly the kind of terrifying incursion into sinister territory players have come to enjoy.
Ukrainian developer GSC Game World, the team behind the series, has brought players on these journeys since the original 2007 instalment, only to be hampered by various delays and reboots – most recently, thanks to the geopolitical situation – but still committing to bring the latest game in the series to fruition, Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl.
Now, let’s talk about the game. As you plunge into its immersive experience, you won’t be given a nursing teat to suckle at. You’ll start with primitive, Rembrandt-level weapons (that is, a Remington shotgun and bow). From there, the game casts you into the deep end of the pool, into the domain of darkness, where nightmarish creatures and things await unseen, and then lets them loose upon you. When predators hear you and track your steps, the terror escalates, and what’s meant to be a slow crawl for survival turns into a nail-biting chase. The game kills you, but teaches you to think The imponderable, unpredictable wild animals and things of the Exclusion Zone instruct you only in death. You have to think on your feet.
True to the Stalker spirit, the latest trailer for the game, debuted by Microsoft, is a montage of peril and mystery. The player steps into the role of a Stalker named Skif, who must battle mutants, treacherous terrain and deadly radiation in a world devastated by nuclear war. The trailer gives us a new perspective on the Stalker universe – one that aspires to both extreme gameplay and a story with a familiar contemporary reality.
Amid ongoing war, GSC Game World has stood strong, both as a unified team and as a got-your-back side for their home country. They’ve taken their struggle and woven it into the fabric of Stalker 2. And MICROSOFT stands with them, encouraging the gaming community to do the same. They share this important message and deserve all the credit in the world. Video games did that, which is huge.
