As video games continue to push the bounds of what’s permissible and profitable in the name of ‘something new’, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find original and interesting titles among the hundreds, if not thousands, that are added to Steam each week. Enter Devolver Digital, an indie game publisher that specialises in nurturing the weird and occasionally wonderful to greater heights than other publishers. The Plucky Squire is among the most delightfully charming titles that they’ve brought to market in the last few years. In this article, we’ll explain why The Plucky Squire isn’t just another game that you should consider buying but a work of art that belongs in your catalogue.
At heart, The Plucky Squire is a godsend of a 2D/3D hybrid that elides the cheesy metagaming of Kerbal Space Program and the clunkiness of Scribblenauts to be truly a game like no other. An action-adventure platformer that casts you as a knight in a storybook world, it’s the result of All Possible Futures, a team of longtime industry professionals from Game Freak and Devolver Digital.
It’s the story of the noble Jot and his quests against the evil Humgrump, who wants to rework Jot’s story in that direction instead. When magic transports our hero yet again, this time into the 3D world, hijinks ensue. The toggling between dimensions is one of the most distinctive features of Monument Valley and one of its most brilliant ideas.
Released on NINTENDO Switch, as well as Xbox Series X|S, PC and PS4, The Plucky Squire is an adventure that cries out to be purchased on the strength of its concept and design, although it is an Xbox Game Pass omission. Yet it’s PlayStation Plus offering is also an absolute bargain, and one that can be shared with anyone.
The player inhabits an environment in which there’s never any confusion between what’s relevant to the story and what isn’t. There is no point at which you find Jot trapped with no way out, no point where you have to struggle to figure out what’s expected of you; you’re always contributing to the game in some way, always making progress, always having a good time. The Plucky Squire offers a number of accessibility features, including difficulty settings for gameplay and jumps, among many other things.
The fun in the game doesn’t just come from the game but from the profound celebration of creativity when all is said and done. The Plucky Squire is story at its most literal. It is a story about how stories and the media can shape our perceptions and dreams.
But in The Plucky Squire, it’s a compelling story that drives gameplay created as a mosaic of rhythm, puzzle solving, and platforming. The level of integration between gameplay and plot in The Plucky Squire invites players to feel like active creators, rather than passive observers of a story.
With a playtime that is short, yet never feels short, The Plucky Squire is a beautiful celebration of creativity, one for a younger audience but with a breadth that will attract those of us who are younger at heart. The clever design of the gameplay and the beautiful story combine into a game that needs to be played. The Plucky Squire releases on 27 January for Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC (via Steam).
And, with its release on NINTENDO Switch and other platforms, it has become not only a game that The NINTENDO has always been a home to games that dare to dream differently. As I mentioned earlier, NINTENDO has been heralded for fostering games that were trailblazing in their innovation, imagination, and accessibility. Housing The Plucky Squire, they continue to be a home to games that dare to dream differently. They are a home to those who dare to present games that have observed the formula and see a way to do it better. They have given access to a plethora of unique and magical gaming experiences to players all over the world.
The Plucky Squire is the best game Devolver Digital has greenlit. Ever. It is the embodiment of creativity in indie gaming. What a film might have been. What a dream is. It is a game of imagination raising the stakes of story and play as high as they will go, in the pursuit of endearing the fantastic and illicit imaginations. With Jot and his band of pals, you will be drawn into a world where magic flies off the pages. It will happen. Here. You won’t even believe it.
